brush / roller painting

Post by themildbunch »

Any one ever brush painted their BX?

Interesting old thread on retro-rides..

Very nice looking Cortina that had been brush / roller painted with Rustoleum. Apparently this can be mixed to any colour. Not that I'm too bothered by the paint on my BX's but the auto is pretty crappy looking - scratches everywhere and lacquer off on the bonnet, roof and spoiler... Looks like a cheap way of getting a pretty good finish if you put enough prep in.

I've just bought some from here - even as standard there is a fair old range.

A lot of prep - most of which has to be done whatever paint process, but usually a lot of finishing work as well.

You can use anything ! In the 1950s when money was tight my dad re-painted our car with Dulux and it looked very good too. I wouldn't suggest that now - Dulux is rubbish these days.

I've rollered both my Series 1 and the Lomax I used to own with exterior gloss - the stuff that guarantees at least 5 years protection seems to work well.

as already mentioned, preparation is the key, then you want to make sure you don't put too much on and create any runs. As I understand it this paint is shiny because of the skin that develops, and rubbing it back removes the gloss permanently.

You ideally need somewhere under cover where you can leave the car for a few days, as this paint takes an age to dry properly, and any rain etc. will ruin the finish

I've seen some H vans painted with rollers, some of which looked almost as good as a not-very-good spray job, and some of which looked more as if they'd been applied using a week-old cauliflower! Given that it's mostly the prep which takes the time/costs the money, I'd be more inclined to find a sprayshop that will let you do the prep and masking, and just let them blow it over when they've got a minute.

We used to use Tekaloid coach paint and a brush, it had an advantage over house paint in that it dried hard and could be cut and polished for a finish that was as good as celly.

Even painted my vintage Rolls that way.
