Resurrection of the Citroen Car Club South West Group

Post by red_dwarfers »

After a couple of emails with Brian Drummond, I've volunteered to dust off the Citroen Car Club South West Section calender and sort out some events. From talking to a few people from this neck of the woods at the ICCCR there is certainly an interest.

At the ICCCR we were talking about a Christmas meal to kick it off but thinking more about it, time is pushing on and it doesn't give much time to plan so I suggest a meal in January or February as a pick me up for any Winter blues!

Next year I am keen to have a Citroen Car Club presence at a couple of the bigger South West rallys at the very least. Maybe a few meets at places of interest.

It would be useful to know who would be interested in coming along to events and roughly where you live, also if you have attended CCC events in the South West previously. Once I get a rough idea I can start looking into venues for the first meet of 2013.

Any events or meets will be open to anyone who has an interest in Citroens, club member or not.

I'm not much of a regular here what with the lack of a BX and all that but I do know some of you are from round these 'ere parts like.

Cheers
Kev

Hi Kev, were you the chap i was talking to about my MK2 astra with Chris Salter, you have a 2.1 SD XM IIRC? (can't remember getting your name).

I'm Tom from Yeovil, with a BX GT :D And will be keen to attend South Westerly events and the like, so I shall watch this space. Oh and hooray for a south west group!

That's me Tom,

I dug out a photo of our trusty Astra, it got stuck going up a forest track and I ended up drawing the short straw:

Jay, I remember having a quick chat on the M5 on the way to the Stratford rally last year during a traffic jam  at least I think it was you.

Thanks for the interest!

I'm in Bradford on Avon. There is a fair number of events with room for Classics. Perhaps an easy way for you to let things self generate is to include details of events catering for classics in Citroenian
On a wider note the restored railway people are always interested in having cars (East Somerset Railway ask me every year) as does Mells Daffodil Day. Our local Lions Day in BOA had 200 cars this year inc two DS, my BX and a Lomax. I will get in touch with one of my Plymouth contacts and revert idc. We get free parking at the Bristol Classic Car show at Shepton Mallet. This approach allows us to use other peoples infrastructure....
Tom what happened to the once famous Yeovil Vintage Vehicle Rally?

Thought it might be! Did you enjoy the rest of the ICCCR? It would have been great to be there for the whole thing but Saturday was my boyfriends birthday and I would've been in trouble if I missed it!

Nice MK2, could do with a bit of TLC but 5dr Merit's are among my favourite MK2's, even better if they're pre-facelift and have the big block 1.6. Yours must be one of the first post-facelift ones, is it an auto 1.6 or manual 1.4? Are you lying on top of the bonnet btw?? I guess for extra grip!?

Does sound like a good way to recruit people Eoin! Being born and brought up in Bournemouth, and not moving into Somerset until 2003 i'm afraid to say that I've never heard of the Yeovil Vintage Rally. There was a classic car and food show thingy on in the Sherborne Castle grounds in July though, I meant to go but was working as usual...

I'm in Bodmin and like Jay would struggle beyond Exeter unless it was a really good event.

Cheers for the tips, certainly something for me to think about.

The general interest so far suggests the meet should be in the Exeter/East Devon area somewhere fairly easily accessible from trunk roads.

I really enjoyed the ICCCR, that camp site had to be the most interesting part of it, all those cars, tents and little tracks I nearly got lost!

It was a 1.4 manual estate, yes that's me a few years ago!

I'm personally a really big fan of Croyde bay and the surrounding area, I know it's north devon but there is a fab campsite there and some really good pubs and of course the amazing beaches! Would that be a good location for anyone?

Initial look throws up. Powderham Castle (near Exemouth) static event. Buckfast Rally free static event. Riviera Rally proper rally starts on Plymouth Hoe organised by MG car club has minimum age restriction (last time I did it my 1974 Porsche Carrera RS 3.0 was eligible). Bradford on Avon Lions Day free static event. Great Dorset Steam Fair static event. Selwood Vintage rally. Camerton Vintage/classic Vehicle Show free. East Somerset Railway Weekend static event. Attwell Museum static event. Mells Daffodil Day static classic car parking. Bristol Classic Car Show static special parking for classics. RNAS Yeovilton Air Day static - special parking for classics - space allocated for clubs to park together - reduced entry ticket.
I will sort out details of organisers and dates and if free or not. Suggest you publish in Citroenian idc as info for those interested and we can hopefully exchange info of events we intend to go to..... if you want help CCC wise I am happy to offer it but don't know where your Eastern boundary is.

For the time being I think it would be wise to keep the initial meets fairly central to where the interested people are. Again, something I will definitely keep in mind though!

Thanks for that Eoin, I really appreciate it, details and dates would be excellent. You'll no doubt see that list again in the magazine in the next few months

According to the SW page on the CCC website, the group covers Dorset, Wiltshire and over to Cornwall.

That is a huge area and an awkward shape! A demographic dumbell! I think that is what beat your predecessor. There is no natural centre of gravity. I shall be digging out the details for the list so far after a short break! Once When I was living in Plymouth I always went to the Cambourne Steam Fair - today with traffic and petrol prices not on! My daughter took 7 hours from Penzance to Frome last Friday. BoA to Halberton nr Tiverton where my grandson's paternal grandmother lives is now over two hours on average.

There's a few of us based in Bristol, but I love Devon / Cornwall so travelling south isn't an issue for me presonally.
I'm no longer a member of the CCC after well over a decade of being so, but some local events might reignite my interest.
I went on a couple of the trips organised by the Salters, and whilst I enjoyed them to a point, the few of us that had BX's rather than D's or tractions seemed to be laregly ignored by most that turned up...
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...
