retirement

Post by barry badger »

One of my tzd estates is being retired next month (mot due) It's been a fantastic car and still drives really well but its time has come. It will be completely gutted, I'm even going to cut the roof off it to try and remove the cappings and citsncycles post is making me think i should keep the windscreen pillars too. Its engine is earmarked for my other tzd estate which has poor starting issues due to poor compression. The tzd hatch was to be its replacement but the engine noise i have posted about is terminal and the rust at the back means its not worth fitting another engine, so i will do the bare minimum to it to mot it. Then it too will be dismantled when the other tzd is repaired. The txd is going to my better half as the dog vehicle (we have five) which is quite upsetting as the interior is pristine, even the parcel shelf hinges are all intact.

If you want to save the windscreen pillars and the roof cappings you may need to remove the complete roof and screen pillars in 1 go - If you get the cappings off I'd be interested to see how as I suspect I have to remove one of mine to get at all the rust above one of my screen pillars

Apparently they are bonded on with a Sikaflex type adhesive. I reckon something like a screen removal cutting wire might be the best bet, as excessive heat might damage the capping.

I've tried removing the cappings before and couldn't without destroying them or the car, i think it may be possible to keep them intact by nibbling the metal away from the back. I think to do a repair to the top of the pillar you'll probably have to cut the front three or four inches of the capping off and glue it back on when finished.

Sounds like it'd be worth removing the TXD interior and putting something else in there. Seems a bit silly to allow a pristine interior to get dog-mullered, especially given how easy it is to swap interiors about.

Those roof cappings are a mare....they're held on with mastic, but the bead is tucked under a metal tongue & groove setup. No-on impossible to remove without busted the capping underneath. It might stay in one piece though, which would allow you to then bond it back on with Sikkaflex or similar.

The car is a dark silver with silver/grey bumpers.
The interior is the same as the one mat is selling.
