Missing a BX

Post by Tim Leech »

Strange, the last few weeks Ive really missed driving a BX regularly (I used the 19TZD quite a bit befoe I sold it), the DTR doesnt get much use and im a bit careful where I leave it. Plus the trip to France as a back seat passenger made it worse, "WTF" the 16TRS hasnt turned a wheel this year, but thats all to change :D Ive ordered 4 new Dunlop Fast Response 185/60 HR 14's through work for a very respectable £40 each, and Paul296 has very kindly offered to finish off the graphite speedlines and shes booked in for an MOT soon.

I need to fit the tailblazer and a few other bits and were good to go!

Maybe you shouldn't have spent so much money on the bodywork - I'm not bothered where Timex gets left

Leech, get it out the garage, get it sorted, get in it, drive it. The highways and byways of Great Britain will be richer for having that lovely car wafting around on them. It might get a few stones chips on it, it might even get twatted in a supermarket car park, who knows? But it's nothing that can't be fixed. Meantime, you'll have the pleasure of driving a BX and everyone turning their head to get a look at it (like me for instance!) 8)

^ That. No point having it both beautiful and roadworthy if you don't drive it and enjoy it :D

That depends on whether you get most pleasure from driving a vehicle, or owning/looking at a shiny one. I'm in the former category, and don't mind clocking up the miles, chips and risk of dents. I do worry about rust though, so can sympathise with Tim somewhat - having observed how quickly things can deteriorate in a heavily salted winter. My worry is that the fleet will rust faster than my availabe time to weld them!

That said, everything deteriorates with time anyway even if you don't use it; although different aspects of the car and at a slower rate in dry storage.

I wont use mine in snow and ice, I dont need too and im fortunate enough to have four examples which are/are now solid and have no rust issues, the 16TRS is totally rust free. But as you say they need using, the last 12 montsh all spare time and cash went on the DTR.

Drive all of mine all of the time just to keep them 'fresh' and capable.

Great cars to drive, Mk1s and Mk2s. Have to keep swapping them about on the drive but thats no great problem. Dont drive the Mk1s about when the gritters have been about but thats all.

My two estates were in very similar condition. In the past six years one has been in daily use, putting in about 12k miles a year on everything from long motorway journeys to bumping down the muddy track to our house. The other has been sitting in the garage/barn waiting for me to get round to fixing the water pump and exhaust. The daily driver is still hale and hearty, it gets fixed when it needs it and the odd cursory service. The other one is currently up on the ramps and as well as the pump and exhaust it now needs a hell of a lot fo work - some welding, LOTs of pipework, complete brake overhaul, all the grease in all the bearings has dried out, hoses have gone hard and brittle, even the foam in the seats has gone hard, etc, etc.
They like to be driven, get some air flowing over them, get everthing nice and warm, keep the grease fluid and the rubber bits flexible. Once this one's on the road I'll be alternating between them but definitely not taking one off the road for any length of time if I can help it.

Was going to fit a new clutch cable, but sadly the cables fine, the clutch itself will need replacing as its heavy and sticky, new drivers door mirror fitted, loose door handle suitably tightened, squeaky steering column now sorted and window seal refitted.
