Horrible job!!

Post by Mothman »

Just replaced the brake light sensor on the n/a diesel estate. Ok, it only cost £2.70[thanks Malcolm] but by eck it was a bugger. Needed hands the size of a kid and a third one would have really helped, especially to get the rear nut in position and then insert the sensor with the same hand. And would the nut seat?? Took ages plus turned me into a contortionist. Need a beer tonight but alls ok now. Dont want that job again.

Brake light sensor on a BX? :? That's modern day technology isn't it?

Still whatever, you conquered it. :)

Do you mean switch?

Malcolm called it a sensor, probably a switch but either way it was a complete bastard to do.
Certainly knackered me and i dont want to do it again. Only complete stubboardness made me complete the job, wasnt going to be beaten. Tried time and time again until i got the bugger to thread itself and even then it wouldnt work and had to be unwound until it did. Took me hours. Now supping cider to get over it.
Nasty bloody thing, made me terribly cross.

Was it a brass or plastic one? The brass ones are easier not to cross thread. I find it easier to put my legs around the headrest and lay upside down on the seat. A headtorch helps too.

Plastic jobbie Mat. Would have been easier to thread if made from metal. Hell, i hope i dont ache too much tomorrow, shouldnt as ime pretty fit for my age but dont want to do it again.
Why o why they couldnt have welded a captive nut there i dont know. Would have made it so much easier for Citroen mechanics to do it.

Bizarrely the OE ones are plastic, but some of the pattern parts (Lucas I think) are in brass!

Got very cross with it bud, i can tell you but persevering got it sorted. Cant tell you how many times i tried to re thread the locking nut at the back with one hand also holding the switch. Bastard bugger it was but after the umpteenth time[2 hours] i did it.
You can do it next time, me give up as JarJar would say.

I got the garage to do mine along with a few other little jobs, had to go back again though as the adjustment was slightly out & they kept flickering rather than coming on (the brake lights that is).

Bit too late now but a very thin coat of oil on old switch thread (? I hear you ask.) thin smear of 5 minute araldite on nut, hold into place with old switch, have cup of tea/fag. Return and unscrew switch, the oil was to stop gluing the switch permanently in place. Screw in new switch, adjust, job jobbed.
Cheers.
