The light grey tail pipe colour disappeared when fuel went lead free.

my pipes are always black now.

(They still sell leaded at a garage near me, but it is very expensive.)

Interesting comments - and I probably am living in the past (I still write code in HTML4 for goodness sake  ) though the Granny with the white exhaust was fixed in the mid 90s and so that was on lead-free fuel.
My understanding is that with emissions controls, engine run at exactly the right ratio of fuel to air
That's my understanding too - but the cynical-old-bugger in me suspects that the most important part of that is the emissions at tickover for the MOT test.

The 2.8 Cologne engine is surprisingly very willing to go to 7K and above  but in my experience that only happens when the torque converter gets too slack and the auto box shifts down to 2nd at 80 on the motorway when 'nipping past' someone slower - and happens shortly before the valvegear in the left bank disintegrates

I'd like to run some 4 star through the valver to see if it feels any different. It did feel perkier on the 100 RON that I filled up with in Switzerland on the challenge. Put a dose of Castrol Valvemaster in the tank every now and then.

When i went to BBR to have an engine re-map on the mini, they said that the standard set-up was very rich & the re-map would lean the engine quite a bit to deal with better horsepower & fuel economy. I ended up taking it back to get fitted back to standard as the re-map was crap, it just guzzled more fuel which was the opposite of what i wanted to happen. There was more power though in the midrange which was rather nice, but that's not the reason i went for it, v-dissapointed & the bastards didn't honour their refund, so i was £400 out of pocket :( I did get to drive their Focus ST 350bhp, it was f-awsome, it pulled as hard in 6th gear as the min did in 3rd gear, apparently it could out accelerate an Audi R8 :)

Not an uncommon result - if it's a fraction too lean you end up having to use more throttle for a given acceleration, so in the end you use more fuel not less.

Going back to the Mothman's carb running lean, it could be down to fuel deposits in the jets having effectively closed the jets up slightly. Modern unleaded is notorious for this, especially if the car's been laid up for any length of time recently. It's worth having the carb professionally ultr-sound cleaned to makre sure every last vestige of fuel varnish is gone.

I've got an ultrasonic cleaner if anyone get's stuck, not sure how expensive a professional charges? Mine would be minimal, just to pay for the bit of leccy & the special fluid that i use. It holds just under 2litres, so should be plenty big enough?
