Turbo Whoooooshhhhhh

Post by Dollywobbler »

Bit of an odd one. On a lengthy drive today, my TXD has started whooshing rather loudly. It's odd because the noise seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle. I'm going to check all of the intake hose connections once the engine has cooled down but has anyone had this before? Can't understand why the whoosh is seemingly behind me.

Power doesn't seem down. I've had a turbo hose come off on an XUD before and it really impacted performance. If anything, it seems even brisker than it normally is.

Exhaust leak? If I had to bet, I'd say on the short right angled section between the front pipe and the cross box, where the hander is welded to the pipe. Or something completely different

That'd make a lot of sense. Does sound like it might be chuffing a bit. The loss of back pressure probably explains why it feels a bit more perky!

Putting my hand over the exhaust certainly makes the chuff worse, so I'll be leak hunting at some point soon by the look of it!

Interesting........this is a exhaust general weak point then? I had an MOT tester object to a slight seam leak on the cross box but when I was attending to it I found the real leak was on the section you mention and it had gone like swiss cheese whereas the rest of the pipe was sound.

Seems to be a weak point, I think down to the fact the welded on hander (or even hanger!) both breaks the coating on the exhaust, and makes a trap for mud and road dirt. I always give this area a couple of coats of high temperature paint before fitting; whether it actually makes a different I don't know but it makes me feel better...
