Yeah for £500 that's a goer as far as I'm concerned. If it all went pear shaped you could get that back for it too.

Rot round the windscreen will be involving to put right properly, but it's not a show-stopper. That's not gel coat on the roof BTW

I think it looks pretty good and for £500 is not expensive. The 16v engine is just great though noisy... The 5th gear can be changed for a higher ratio from a turbo diesel and this makes it a lot calmer on the motorway. I get better than 30mpg from mine even before I had the 5th gear changed. And I have a heavy right foot. I've never regretted buying mine and only regrets I hear in regard to 16vs is from those who have sold theirs. Go for it!

16v is even noisier with a sports air filter and a sports exhaust! Mine was hellishly loud, especially on motorways. Did once hit the dizzy heights of 40mpg but regular forays into the 4000rpm 'fun zone' meant that was a one off!

Rare leather seats & yes, they would appear to be the mega rare red tinted rear lights as well. It need's cosmetic work doing, but if the underneath is in good condition & the car is mechanically sound, i'd say go for it :) I'd be a bit worried about the rust around the windscreen, but as other members have shown it can be sorted out. Rear arches looking crusty, but thats quite common & again can be sorted.

Only real shame is that it isn't black ;) . I'd definitely say go for it, expect to spend a little bit of money on it though.

I've been in contact with a friend who owns a bodyshop and he is going to give me a ball park figure for the roof/bonnet/arches paint and repair, if its not too expensive i will buy the car after another good look at the floor. If i don't i will pass the details on to anyone on the forum who is interested.
Thanks for all of your advice, hopefully it will work out!

Lacquer and paint, same as most metallic cars! Gel coat goes on fibreglass.

The condition of the roof looks like grp without the gelcoat. I'll take a better pic if I get it.

The roof isn't GRP, it's metal. The only GRP parts on that car are the bumpers, sideskirts, rear vent spats and all four arch spats.
The boot and bonnet are similar, but they're something else. Not actually fibreglass.

Looks like the roof's had a bad paint job in the past to me.

Got it bought yet then?!

The bonnet and boot/ hatch are GFRP, just a different type of polyester. The side rails on the roof are also GFRP, but not the roof it's self (having chopped through many i can guarantee they spark under a grinder). The specifics of the GFRP are found in the Citroen 'body manual' should anyone need them.

I took the plunge and bought the BX this morning. Drove it back home on some trade plates from a friend, it started firing on only 3 cylinders for a short period then cleared and appeared again, also the coolant tank level light came on but the coolant is fine, I'll check those things tomorrow along with a compression test. I'll give it a good going over in the next week and make a list of things i need, hopefully you guys on here can help?
I gave the outside a quick clean and took some photos.

The wheels are in good condition, it will need new tyres though, they are quite perished.

The leather seats are in great condition, a good clean and some gliptone they will look even better.

Nice rear.
