Fan destruction

Post by kiwi »

Took the 19TZS in for its physical and while it was up on the hoist spotted a stick protruding from the bumper grill. Closer examination found it was actually wedge by the Fan blade. Well removal of that was easy enough and of course could prove useful in keeping the car cool luckily being aircon model it has twin fans. Also noted an oil leak from the rear of the engine somewhere (seperate post to appear in technical)

Easy Aye....nope

After it passed its test driving home just a few hundred metres hear this crunching noise and wondering what it was pulled to the side of the road, nothing obviuos at this stage, carry on next minute hear the fan belt squel probably the aircon one. Nothing to worry about yet!

Well when I slowed down for our driveway holy heck the car was vibrating something terrible.

What was it? The photo finishes the story. Uploaded to the BX Facebook page.

Never a dull moment with BX ownership! Now the TZS is back to its thirsty habit of drinking water and noted the fuel consumption was not that good. However I have a theory on the poor fuel relating to the fuel last filled back in mid JUne and Car not used much until September. Could confirm what I have been told so many times in NZ that the fuel goes off after 3 months standing.

Meanwhile the other TZS (auto) is due for its check up and well thats becoming a drama. Firstly the oil leak around the pressure switch is akward enough that I can not get the only 20mm spanner I have in the space provided. So socket at the garage maybe the easiest solution. Second thing was noticed the strut return on the N/S was leaking an easy fix with bit clear pipe, but whilst under noted black shine on the O/S tyre. Investigation revealed the CV boot shot to hell and the cause! Broken handbrake cable support left dangling thats shreaded the CV boot. Fingers crossed that the dry CV joint is not fubar...but have a spare to hand if needed.

Never a dull moment with a BX.

When I was young apprentice on day release at Motor Vehicle technical college one one of our tutors told us you should treat petrol like milk. It is only fresh when you put it in the tank and then has a very limited storage life.

But it tastes rubbish on your cornflakes!

I've heard this too, especially with modern fuel. However I've never personally noticed any ill effects, although not monitored fuel consumption. I last but petrol in the Discovery almost a year ago (it runs on LPG) yet that still seems to run fine. I'd imagine a carb fed car with no closed loop control would show any effects more though.

Modern fuel is indeed short-lived. Partly due to the nasty stuff they have to put in instead of lead (also makes it very hard to extinguish once it's burning), and partly due to the higher levels of bio-ethanol used now. As well as being short-lived, when it evaporates off it leaves very hard-to-shift deposits in carbs, injectors etc.
If you're leaving a carb-fed car or bike standing for any length of time it's worth draining the carb completely.
Oh, and of course this modern stuff also attacks older fuel hoses.
