I love mending BXs

Post by Jaba »

I wish.
I have been trying to 'improve' my TD Hurricane for a while. Its been off the road for a couple of years awaiting my attention.
I reconned its original 180k engine and Turbo last year. Then this autumn took the temporary engine out and dropped the refurbed one in. The job went well until I tried to start it up. Zilch.

I played around with it for a while, there was plenty of fuel around and leaking back from the injectors too but when I removed the injector pipes from the pump there was absolutely no fuel at all being squirted out of the Lucas pump. So I had a spare Lucas pump which I bought from Tom Sheppard a while back and I fitted this in.
But unbelievably this was completely squirtless too and despite full priming there was pretty much no resistance when turning it by hand to prime it. The other one at least had some resistance.
Merde, I thought, two duff pumps.
Next task was to fit the Bosch pump from the removed engine. This turned out to be a challenge too.
First problem was that it did not fit on the engine mounting bracket, evidently Bosch and Lucas are different. Next problem the drive sprocket wouldn't fit on, these are different too ! And I had to loosen the pump off and shift it rearwards to get enough room to slip the Bosch one on. I primed it and cranked it over till I had fuel coming out of the loosened injector pipe unions. After nipping them up it managed to start up albeit running roughly.
Waahey, well sort of. I have now run out of time for more BX dabbling as I am off to Val d'Isere now for two weeks skiing then I will be in the Alps for most of the rest of the winter and won't be doing anything in the way of car fixing.
So this will have to wait until spring when I will start looking around for someone to rebuild one of my duff pumps.
Anyone have any recommended diesel specialists??

Apologies if you've already done this, did you change the injector pipes from the lucas one's to the bosch one's? If not, that'll be the reason its running rough as the pipes are different & are specific to that diesel pump only.

Much more importantly, did you swap the injectors over?
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I'd presumed that those had been done, perhaps both weren't?

Thanks for the interest guys but of course they were swapped. I don't think the Lucas pipes would fit without some serious bending. Actually the rough running got a lot better after I noticed a weep on one of the unions on the pump.
Its a lot of hassle often after all the major and important jobs are done.

Anyway its all alone sulking in the garage now until next spring.

Abandoning Hurricanes ... shooting kittens ...

You are a Bad Man :(

On a more helpful* note, when I was in Bristol, there was a good pump specialist the garage I worked for used who were happy to do mail order repairs - think it may have been DTM (and a web search has turned up an organisation by that name), but perhaps someone in that neck of the woods could advise, I may be thinking of the wrong co. or they may not be any good any more.

*marginally. Maybe.

Following on from this (belatedly) I followed up Caffiend's helpful suggestion and found indeed a diesel pump company in Bristol called DTM as well as Tom Day and Halls electrical all in Bristol and all self proclaimed diesel pump specialists.
So when I am back in circulation I will give them all a ring and see what they can do for me.

In the meantime the GTi is going on a little trip after next week from Briancon to St. Anton in Austria and then on to Arabba in Italy. I hope is doesn't snow too much as even in this snowy part of Europe it slows down travelling quite a bit.

I'd certainly recommend DTM but the others have quoted me silly money for doing such jobs as replacing the nose main shaft seal on the CX pump (very similar to the BX Lucas pump)… There are are plenty of similar diesel specialist though across the UK.

Halls electrical may be a pump specialist, but as the name suggests, it's not their main business. They used to specialise in automotive wiring but have branched out into reconditioning of alternators, starters etc, and I know at one time used to buy up all the old alternators and starters from Yate Salvage to rebuild for their own stock.

Thanks guys for your input from the locality. DTM seems to be the favourite. I might even approach my local diesel specialists but even my local garage say they are very expensive.
Sometimes a BX à essence has an advantage.

You could also try the injection centre in longwell green - been recommended to me before as an alternative to DTM
