I took the BX our for a drive in the snow

Post by kiwi »

Yesterday took the BX out into snow...yes snow was a fun drive.

Actually was a bit boring but the photo opportunity was one not to miss. 8)

Absolute crap though compared with a decent 4x4.

Indeed. As I discovered two winters ago! Though it doesn't have to be a fancy 4x4. Even a Subaru will do. All-wheel drive makes a huge amount of difference, especially going uphill. Front-wheel drive is not good for that in the snow!

All that effort to put chains on it, and then a few miles with no snow buggers the tyres!!
Tried mine last year with no chains, nearly didnt make it home, the Mitsti took the piss out of it, a fantastic drive in the snow.
Ime afraid BXs, great motors that they are just cant compare to a 4x4. If you think otherwise you are just in cloud[land of the long white!!!] and are taking the piss.

Winter here too bud, bad weather forcast with snow here too!! And your piccie only shows a smattering of snow, what about 12 ins, BXs useless then, my pickup will cope with that easily?

And just a thought, as i know you are an expert in the snow with 2 wheel drive motors, i dont think it very sensible to shout about how good BXs are in the snow when clearly they are not. You may give the impression to those who are inexperienced drivers that the BX is better than any 4x4 and cause them to believe this and have either a very bad time of it in snow or have a terrible accident.
You may be good in snow, that i have no doubt, but to imply [from other posts] that the BX is a fantastic vehicle in treacherous conditions is misguided, its the same as any other 2wd vehicle, front wheel drive or otherwise, with or without chains and dosnt come near to a 4x4.
I think you should be very carefull you dont say anything which an inexperienced driver could misconstrue and kill him or herself.

I think BXs are pretty good in the snow for a 2wd car. Or slippy mud come to think of it. As far as cars that just keep going go, the BX is pretty good I'd say.

If someone wants to go and kill themselves trying to drive one up a cliff that's their business. Nothing to do with me or my opinions....people don't have to listen to other people.

At least they'd get a Darwin award!

Every year we seem to have the same discussion

I think the light weight of the BX helps it against other FWD cars, but a bigger factor is driver skill and a sensible view of their own ability.

Andy, i've got no idea why you think the BX is no good in the snow, i regularly drive in the snow with winter tyres & have never gotten stuck or had any problems. I've seen 4x4's give up & park up by the side of the road whilst i've driven past them. On the A61 dual carriageway i regularly drive in the outside lane where the snow is & i'm going faster than the nearside lane with no snow on. Get some winter tyres fitted, the BX is superb. Normal tyres are shit when the temps get low & conditions get slippy, the only saving grace is that if you're running summer tyres have at least 5mm of tread & are 165 sized, they are actually not bad in the snow, the wider sized tyres are pretty average tbh in those conditions.

Thank you Mat last part is the part that comes into play all the time "bigger factor is driver skill and a sensible view of their own ability.
"

Mothman do I detect you are having a bad day with your posts bud? I posted this with a sense of irony and humour. Took advantage of a short lived cold snap to where I just happened to be at the time (day before shorts and T-shirts as is today).

Anyways snow is the least of our worries at the moment we got two smouldering volcanoes used as part of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film sets playing up after many years of quite. Ash will be more of a challenge to any car might even affect next summers weather.
