Usually the inside wheel, but not always! As I discovered after changing the wrong wheel bearing on the Green Tiger...

Get it done though as a failed bearing is not joyous. I took the hub off and took it to a garage for them to smash the old bearing out and push the new one in. Cost me a few quid plus the price of the bearing. Similarly, balljoint failure can be very exciting, though ARB drop links are the usual culprit for noise.

Thanks for the advice chaps, didn't get around to doing anything today (had a list of things to do, BX and otherwise). Saw the Hobbit, and had a surprise lunch at Steve's mum's and now it's dark :( Sunday is my next day off, so we'll see... At this rate i'll have to pay for things to be done.

Got a surprise half a day off of work today, it was really quiet so we decided to go home! I owe them 3 hours but i'll make them up when we're busy. So after my cup of coffee and toastie sandwich, i'll do some BXing! Plans are to service her, give her a bloody good clean then take a look at the brakes if there's time. Might pop over to East Side garage (if they're open) to see if I can book her in for clunk/bearing work etc.

Filled up the tank for the second time today, £80  and 47mpg. With binding rear brakes, unserviced and very much not economical driving i'm impressed :)

You got £80 in?! Most I've managed so far is £75 and I thought I'd let that get too low...

I'd be tempted to have a look at the brakes ahead of any servicing myself. Might find that they behave after a bit of cleaning up.

The thing with the brakes is that they must only be sticking slightly, as they don't make the wheels more than warm. I did use shell's 149.9 ultimate diesel :)

Service, check! Had to go and buy a chain ratchet oil filter tool as I hurt my wrist trying to do it by hand, reckon I could've done it if I could get two hands in there... Cleaned it too, but by the time i'd finished it was more or less dark so clean piccies will have to wait until tomorrow/sunday.

I may have discovered two potentially quite large issues. The first is (shock horror!) some LHM leaks, one from the RH front strut that is large ish but looks potentially like a strut return pipe, as it doesn't leak whilst running; the other is behind the engine, and LHM is collecting and dripping off of the cross member/suspension wishbone thingy there behind the engine. The second potentially major-er issue is that I decided I didn't like the sunroof wind deflector, then I removed the two outer screws and tried the middle one, heard this crunching noise and it came loose. Oh shit, all along the front of the sunroof is really quite rusty, and there is now a hole in the middle, I replaced the outer screws and tightened them up like a nuns whatsit, hoping that the seal from the deflector will keep nearly all of the water out.
Oh and the passenger front carpet/footwell is often wet, hoping it's a sunroof drain tube, but as the darn thing won't open I guess wet the carpet shall be. Maybe I should get someone to chop the complete roof off of a non sunroof car and weld it onto this one? That fixes lots of issues, wet carpets, rust, more rust and a patch of even more rust!

Might be looking at that doom blue TZD in Wareham at this rate... Shame as the paint is good, the engine is great and i've bonded with the thing already.

Depending on how that blue TZD goes, I think it'll be going to the garage Monday morning, as the Astra is still on the road there is no rush (until 8th January that is). It's quite nice having two cars to choose from using!

Dirty pictures (reason for re-post).

It's a temp guage, but never reads above 60 degrees.

Yep, but the heater gets very toasty so quite sure it's not a sticky stat. Looks chavvy anyway, as the hole is there and a wiring route, long term i'll put in a more tasteful one, or better still a boost gauge :D And put a temp gauge where the lights of doom are as per GTI's. Yup, boost gauge sounds better.

I've been thinking about the sunroof problem, and so far the best thing to do (I think) is for me to remove the sunroof and mechanics, then drop the car to a garage to weld up the hole, making it look nice and pretty. How difficult would it be to remove the sunroof? I assume you'd have to take all the pillar trims off, the headlining and then start unbolting and unplugging things.

It takes two baby.

Seriously, Doc said on my blog at one point that it's not a job for the faint-hearted and ideally needs two people to replace/refit the cassette. Haynes BOL gives sunroof removal about 4 lines from memory

Well, it aint going back in so I suppose if I got pissed off I could hit/hack/cut bits off? Or make a token effort and then give to the garage man...

I was going to say that if it's stable, it further suggests it's not a sticky thermostat - if it had stuck open then the temperature would be all over the place depending on the load you're putting on the engine. The radiator is/should be capable of cooling it on a hot day working hard, so most of the time the thermostat is restricting the flow.

Most likely it's actually reaching the correct temperature (especially as the heater gets toasty), just a mis-matched sender and gauge. The most important thing is looking for changes rather than what the numbers say. But boost gauge sounds good!
