exhaust emissions

Post by rutter123 »

I have just taken the tzd for the mot and its failed, not too badly tho, tho it has passed on the emissions, i was just wondering where us diesel bx owners stand on diesel emissions for the future, as im sure old smokers like mine are not that environmentally friendly, will it get the point where we will have to fit diesel particulate filters??

No chance of anything being retro-fitted as its not quite as simple as just bolting something on, it has to be engineered to work with a specific car, engine transmission etc...& the legislation would be a nightmare to enforce on older vehicles. If it meant a reduction in road tax, i'd be happy to fit something to reduce emissions, but seeing as the govt aren't interested, sod them.....

Let me dust off my crystal ball

It's possible they might, who knows? In Germany, unless an older diesel has a cat fitted then road tax is hugely more expensive. I think that's avoided if the vehicle has Historic status, but that has to be inspected and judged whether it has 'classic status' and not merely an old banger.

I doubt they'd do the same here (leaving aside the argument over pollution during manufacture) because as time goes on, those higher polluting diesels will form such a small part of overall emissions that it won't be worth bothering about. I can see more cities taking on London's idea though, and maybe the LEZ will eventually extend to cover cars as well?

I've often wondered how that LEZ works - all I know that there's signs up all over the place, 1 mate replaced his 110 County with a VW T4 bus as it saved him about £30 a day, and another mate's garage locally got themselves a nice recovery truck to replace their old one because the company selling it was no longer allowed into London with it.

A lot of people often use Germany as an example of the future of Classic cars here, but rather than force people to retro fit emissions kit onto older vehicles, I suspect our government will continue to try to tax the higher emmissions rated cars off the road, and other than maybe hiking up the larger engine bracket on the older vehicles leave the rest of us alone. Remember, at present they are busy trying to cut red tape to justify closing all the regional offices without increasing the manpower at Swansea too much.

Malcolm, that has not always been the way. My Ferrari 308 was 1974 but retrospectively had to achieve the 1976 on emission levels from the date when they became effective. This meant we had to lean it off, do the emissions test and then reset to make the engine perform. Very labour intensive and expensive.....

I think you are right Malcolm, bog standard cars will be fine but flash gits in their very expensive, fast revving motors that produce more pollution will be curbed.

I suspect you'll be fine Neil, they'll only be able to introduce a no modification rule from a date point going forward, no way could they do it retrospectively.

maybe your MOT tester either didnt like you/high performance gas guzzlers, or he didnt read/understand the rules correctly,
as im sure they cant back date newly introduced MOT ruling,

the other though might be your car is actually later than the reg date applied if it were an import????

My Series 1 Land Rover, while 1956, still requires an MOT because the earliest date of registration with DVLA is 1964, the date it left the Army. With vehicles being registered for the first time, whether because they are imports or, like mine, ex military, it was common practice right up to the introduction of the prefix registrations to register these as new vehicles.

As far as I know the only restrospective ruling for cars is screen washers which must be fitted to every car with a fixed windscreen irrespective of age.

Unfortunately this rule has never applied to the LEZ; When it was brought in for trucks ALL trucks had to comply with the set LEZ emmisions (Euro 3) or not enter (Without a £200 a day charge.). We had to have a massive capitol expenditure on adding new trucks to our fleet and had to spend £3500 per truck on a filter system for all the other trucks that we wanted to enter the LEZ zone. Since introduction they have also phased in the stricter emmision levels (Euro IV) so from the 3rd January 2012 our 04 plate Euro 3 trucks that had previously been LEZ compliant were no longer allowed into the zone either. At the same time they increased the criteria to large vans, mini buses, 4x4 utility vehicles & other specialist diesel vehicles but these only had to meet the entry level Euro 3 emmisions.
I have no doubt it will shortly be widened to include cars and they will probably have to also meet the Euro 3 entry level whilst the light van class will be raised at the same time to Euro 4 and the trucks and busses to the new Euro 5 level which is already the new standard that vehicle manufacturers have to meet.

For Citronut: The Ferrari Garage concerned was Ryder Brothers near Pewsey who are leading members of Ferrari Owners Club and Ferrari Challenge contenders - no fools. You are definitely wrong. The !974 and 1975 308s were caught in that trap. Nothing to do wth gas guzzler envy they raced 355s...

ok ok calm down

as i dont know you or the garage you took your car to for its MOT, different MOT testers do have there own ideas, and interpret the rules as they see them,
