If anybody wants to drive at my speed, good luck to them without winter tyres. I can't be responsible for other peoples stupidity & lack of knowledge. 2 yrs ago some idiot tried to keep up, i noticed that he was fishtailing & he quickly dropped back, absolute muppet. The bx was rock solid, i was doing 50 on a dual carriageway at the time. I don't speed & certainly keep to the speed limit, but mostly under, but i usually do 30 in a 30 & 40 in a 40 traffic permitting & usually at higher speeds make sure it's safe to do so. I'm not in the business of hurting myself or anyone else for that matter, but idiots can suddenly appear regardless of the road conditions & wipe you out, so snow is no different. I just continually check for grip regularly at whatever speed i'm doing, just incase.

I've been hit by a car head on at 70 (and limped away), a lad was killed a week later on the same road doing 30..., I've been run over while riding motorcycles on three other occasions, all at 30mph and under. Statistcally I'm safer at 200 mph ;) and that's said tongue in cheek.

Aye. Speed is a factor, not a reason. Speed doesn't kill. Driving without paying attention/while texting/chatting on your mobile/without respecting the dangers kills, but I guess that isn't quite so catchy.

Speed is only a real problem when you just cant slow down in time.

Saw this twice today with young lads showing off what they could do in the snow, a Scooby doo tearing around my village with slush all over the road and clearly over the legal limit with the base throbbing from their stereo. What can you do!!!

To be fair I think we were all young and dumb at some stage and those boundary pushing without wrapping us around a tree gave us some the experiance we have today. Once you learn the results of your actions your less inclined to do them they say.

Although last week being overtaken by a Law abiding member of the community who puffs up their chest at the Hoons racing around had me smiling :) At the time I was doing 100kph the legal road limit (verified by my GPS) and caught this on dashcam.

Had a bit of a moment today. Entered a section that's known to be tricky with a bit too much speed. Came around a bend to find the road covered in icy snow from bank to bank. Dabbed the brakes and eased off the steering a bit - which had gone very light. Thankfully got around it but the back end had a good twitch. If I'd been on summer tyres, I think I'd've been straight into the drift - same if I'd panicked and slammed the anchors on.

We didn't have any snow last night, and the road was clear yesterday. This was all caused by high winds blowing drifts back across the road. Learnt a lesson - don't assume the road is clear all the way!

Not just a winter thing - but I used to ask the question - 'what if there's a milk float just around the corner ?'

Yup, 1980, the bike was an 81 GSX750ET and I was just 18. I learned expect the unexpected the hard, early and got through it luckily. Just sprains and bruises.

I got T-boned by a Ford Cortina whilst riding my Yamaha TZR 125 circa 1987. My speed was around 15 mph and the Cortina's 2 mph. I proceeded to fly over the bonnet of said Cortina and landed in a heap by the pavement, promptly followed by my TZR which also flew over the Ford's bonnet and landed on top of me. My spinal column was FUBAR for several months. Speed was not a factor, just a idiot car driver. SMIDSY!!!

The lad that died the week after, on the same bit of road was on a CB100. My bike punched the Agro and stopped it in its tracks.

very much luck of the draw :? I was told about a friend of mines brother, while touring in France on his fireblade, he got ahead of the pack and went the wrong way. Realising his mistake he stopped and started to turn his bike in the road, using his feet, pushing it backwards and forwards, you get the picture, lost balance and fell in to the road, just as a paraplegic driver came around the corner. The car... just hit the biker but because the car driver couldn't see and couldn't get out of the car easily, he reversed back; trouble was he had trapped the guys helmet and reversing back, broke his neck, killing him. That one wasn't down the speed either.

Years ago, travelling back from Bristol on the M4 having been jumping out of balloons we came across a smashed up motorbike on the hard shoulder, a few yards ahead there was this biker lying there and a few yards on was his helmet. We noticed his head was still in it so we didnt bother to stop and give assistance as we thought this would have been pointless. Somebody started to pull in just after we passed. Noticed this cos we were in a knackered Army Landie which we had had to stop and bodge the exhaust so couldnt go very fast.
He must have been going some as there was quite a bit of damage to the side of the motorway.

I can tell you I was lucky when I hit some diesel on the baby Vara a couple of months back - I went down and damaged my left wrist, knee and ankle, plus did around £100 damage to the bike, but the traffic in both directions stopped before hitting me and the bike, and a couple of drivers got out and helped me right the bike and get it out of the traffic.

Is that slightly less depressing?
