Perhaps they should qualify it. "Will pass a stuck Land Rover as long as you don't drive on the same icy bit."

Well Timex managed to out perform a Freelander in the snow the other week, but I suspect that may have had more to do with tyre fitment and driver skill for each vehicle than anything else!

I don't want to piss on your chips but a lot of freelanders are run as two wheel drive with the propshaft removed.

With the Freelanders it's often because the viscous coupling siezes up, and it's cheaper to remove rather than replace ;)

I remember one of the Land Rover mags buying one a few years back as a project car to prove that they were proper Land Rovers, and being staggered that it had the original coupling at 70k miles!

Yep - as far as I'm concerned it's not a proper Land Rover unless it's sat on leaf springs!

Having low range gearing is the key factor for me, which the Freelander also doesn't have! Even a crawler first gear would have been sensible. But that wasn't their target market so you could say they made the right decision.

Actually, a few years back there were a free Freelanders in the group of people I knew (I removed the propshaft and viscous coupling for one girl  ) and I was impressed with what they could do off road. It may have been down to driver skill, but a couple of guys couldn't get their standard Discoveries up a steep gravel climb, yet the Freelander managed it by braking the wheels that started to spin. I was gobsmacked!

Nah, those coily thingies will never catch on! It's like all these cyclists riding bikes with rubbery tyres and little bits of metal linked together to connect the pedals to the wheels - it's just a passing fad - they don't even drive the right wheel!

Freelanders didn't handle as well as the competition in their market sector on the road, but would walk all over them off road, as they were more biased towards off roading than the Honda's etc. I gather a lot of it was due to the electronic trickery they use, but the main issue was that the class leading off road performance we've come to expect from Land Rover was unfortunately matched to the build quality we'd also come to expect.

And the water leaks...

That's it! It can't be a true Land Rover if it doesn't leak! Unfortunately, the Disco is now a proper Landy again - it's pouring into the driver's footwell from somewhere :(

The series 1 qualifies then - it has a through flow water system in the cab if you drive it in the rain!

My Dad worked at the local LR dealer from 1983 to about 2004, and there seemed to be a fault common to every vehicle they launched during that period - the tailgate didn't fit!
