Another CT - another 2 years!

Post by paulwitchard »

The 'champagne' BX mentioned in this thread http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 4&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has just had its biennial Controle Technique (MOT equivalent) and passed again without the need for a contre visite (another trip to correct major faults), so its onwards and upwards for another 2 years hopefully.
260,000 km (about) and counting!

MIne's due for its CT soon as well. Just returned from yet another 1000 mile round trip to UK, this time mostly towing a grossly overloaded trailer (2/3 of a LWB Land Rover chassis, a big steel cabinet, a cast iron industrial sewing machine, lots of motorbike bits, a Wacker trench compacter, a load of lathe parts and a 1950s touring tandem,). No problems at all, despite the fact the clutch has been on its last legs for the past six months at least and I haven't got round to changing it.

Got stopped in Melton Mowbray for having yellow lights! I pointed out the French plates and was waved on my way...

When will British bobbies realise that 'selective yellow' is perfectly legal?!

To be fair, he didn't actually say, 'that's illegal' - he said he stopped me to ask why they were yellow because he was curious. He wasn't a traffic plod, just a normal beat bobby in a back street.

Yeah well, the BX does tend to smell a bit like that when I've been away in it for a week...

And for those who don't know the reference....

Basically the 6 monthly checks were getting changed the most popular thought was to have 12 monthly checks! (lot of Brits here ;)) but Motor Trade Federation kicked up a fuss saying was going to cost jobs. So now a compromise no test for first 3 years (as in uk?), annual test on vehicles registered after 1st January 2000, older than that every six months still.

Supposed to have been a major shake up of the WOF system looked more like a token effort.

When they looked like changing ours to every 2 years the argument used to stop it was that it would mean more dangerous cars on the road - unfortunately they believed them!

This has only take 3 years of discussion and not in place until July 2014. And yes same arguements have dragged them to this decison that plus a lot of lobbying from the Motor Trade Association with lots of advertising with the biggest hypocrit (V8 Motorings Greg Murphy) being used to push their case. The other arguement it was going to cost several thousand jobs in the motor industry (testers and mechanics) if it went annually. Even with the changes outlined they still are throwing the same unemployed number around. What does make me laugh is you got the AA on the other hand shouting about the amount of rogue testers that need to be cleaned out.

Was a time the AA was focused on helping people with Breakdowns, Maps and road signs! Now they are very commericallly run which started around the same time the got the contract to do Driver Licencing from the goverment. Become a Political thing!

Makes little differance in my view! As I have found over the years things that are tested can fail with in weeks or even days of a test!

I may be wrong, but for the purposes of reporting a potential dodgy MOT, major structural issues have to be reported within 12 weeks of the test, and mechanical issues within a couple of weeks, so for all intents unless it's a new MOT it's useless for anything but allowing you to buy a tax disc!
