BX GTi 4x4 history

Post by Paul Walton »

Hello

I have been commissioned by Classic and Sportscar magazine to write an article on the Citroen BX GTi 4x4, Peugeot 405 MI 16 4x4 and Renault 21 Turbo Quadra. Information on these car's histories is limited and so I was wondering if anyone could provide a basic history of the BX. Plus, was it an homologation for motorsport?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

Interestingly, I could scan the article in Citroën's Frontlines magazine from March 1990 in which Jeremy Clarkson favourably describes the 4x4 as a 'Car for the enthusiast' with it's 'astonishing... four wheel drive system'. No doubt it is - but how times have changed! I'd love to see what he'd say about a drive in a BX today!

Hello Paul. I never realised that they made a 4x4 version of the Renault 21 Turbo. Sounds like an interesting beast! Im pretty sure that I have an old artical from a Whatcar mag of the early 90's that compares these exact 3 cars, but in front wheel drive form only, and rather than the BX GTi 8 valve, it was the BX 16V they tested, which performance wise was on par with the other two cars (same engine as the 405 as you'll know). If I remeber rightly, the Renault engine was bigger by a small margin, and slightly more powerful than the BX engine, but did use a Turbo chargher to manage this.

This particular article was very well written and the cars underwent a series of demanding drives accross France and then onto the German autobarns. I can try and dig it out for you if its any use, but id imagine the cars are totally different to drive if they have 4x4.
