I can tell you a few stories about the adverse effect these dodgy repairers have had on owners overall. Like many years ago when a guy had a 5 speed CX 2400 Gti for saale for almost nothing. I spotted the advert as it said it was cheap due to it needed a few thousand spent on the hydraulics which had failed.
I rang and was greeted by the (ex) owner almost in tears who told the tale of woe of a guy arriving, checking out the car, handing over the dosh and getting the papers signed etc, then going out to the car pulling a drum of LHM from the boot of his car, priming the pump, at which stage it rose and he drove off in it.
Had contacted a local "specialist" a few days earlier because the suspension wouldn't pump up and was told it was going to cost "thousands" as the entire hydraulic system was stuffed. All it really turned out to be was low fluid and air in the system.
My BX wagon was in a similar situation with (possibly the same specialist) telling the previous owner that the car was barely a parts proposition due to an oil leak that would need the engine out to fix. I took a close look, replaced the oil pressure light sender switch and no more leak; total time around 3 minutes.
You guys get a fair bit of it over there, but here is a real education. Personally, I reckon there's less thieves wandering the streets of Aden than there is in Citroen service in Australia based on a per capita percentage.
