Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
Hi Pogo, as the BX has disc brakes around they don't have 'Brake Wheel Cylinders' but they do have pistons/seals on the Brake Calliper's (One on the front as it has a sliding type calliper and on the rear there's two one either side of the disc) and as a rule they seldom leak !Pogo wrote:Can the motor factors not help?, I'm assuming you want a brake wheel cylinder?
What James will be looking for is a rear suspension hydraulic cylinder which can be of either two piston/bore sizes dependant on whether its a hatchback (35mm dia.) or estate (37mm dia.) model (Which James needs to clarify) ?
As to availability of these thro' a Motor factors or the likes of ECP/GSF will be probably be zero
The last NOS pair which sold on E-bay achieved a three figure ransom (If I find the post I'll link it up later) !
I think the only way forward is to use a known/good Xantia type which you need to modify/reduce the outer boss dia. down to 15.7mm dia. which is internally tapped to connect the 3.5 mm dia. feed pipe tapping into (See photo below to BXC post) which is from 'rmattila' how to modify an Xantia rear hydraulic cylinder as per the thread he made the posting in !
Click on photo for thread ('rmattlia' post is #4 to see how to do the machining operation) or I suppose you could use an abrasive flap wheel if your careful !
I've also noticed that the Xantia owners over on the FCF are struggling to find good used/NOS cylinders too, this particular item is becoming a real BIG problem for these old BX/Xantia vehicles now
Good luck with your search for one !

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
I'm currently breaking a tzd hatch, the cylinders aren't leaking so i assume they're ok.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
pm sent to barry, thanks. with help from a member, i have since spoken to a citroen specialist in bradford (ray calvert) who said it is quite common for the boot to be a cheap brand and being a cheap brand it is sometimes known for the two pipes that push into it, to come out and/or leak fairly easily? they should take some effort to pull out, even with pliers sometimes he said? one of the two pipes on mine is inserted and held in very well, as i did'nt try to pull it out, where the other one did come out very (VERY) easy regardless how far i pushed it in. I was advised to try clamp (to seal it) or get another genuine boot (as the boot i have on the bx looks brand new, must of been replaced soon before e bx was taken off road)? At least i may try this. I will try remove the boot to see if the cylinder is corroded (rather than just assume). Fingers crossed.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
You'd find it very helpful James if you tried to work out WHERE exactly it's leaking from!
The sphere seal?
The pipe union?
The ram seal?
Only in the case of the last one are you likely to actually need to replace the whole unit.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
i really am a novice im only really going from the info of looking at the boot (externally, covered in lhm) and the info from the guy i mentioned earlier. He said if the green stuffs squirting out, its the cylinder leaking and needs replacing or if it's dripping (in which it is...drop stains on floor) it's related to the poor boot. As mentioned being a novice could you please explain what a union is? as this is the first time someone has mentioned a union. thanks
i will again try to find out where the leak actually is coming from but the last time i looked i could,nt?

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
Before getting under the car make sure it is blocked up so it can't fall on you.
Slip a sheet of cardboard under the rear of the car where the cylinder is.
1. On the side of the cylinder at it's rearmost point is a metal pipe that goes into it, check that for a leak when the suspension is pressurised.
2. Check the seal between the sphere & the cylinder for drips. Grasp the sphere firmly and try turn anti-clockwise it to see if it is loose. IF IT STARTS to turn stop and tighten it up again, you don't want to loosen it too much or things will get messy! If the leak IS coming from this sphere seal but it's not loose it could be perished and you'll need to depressurise the system to replace it.
3. On the side/bottom of the rubber boot you describe, there are 2 black plastic tubes coming out. One returns fluid the ram seal has leaked and the other is a breather. Gently pull them out to see if any quantity of fluid leaks out, a few drips is to be expected, a flood is not. Then lower & raise the car between LOW & NORMAL height several times to evacuate any sitting fluid in the rubber boot, then clean around it with a rag.
Now replace or flip over the cardboard so it's clean and raise the car between low & maximum a dozen times. If you now have a puddle under there then it is definitely your cylinder leaking. They are seldolm repairable due to water/rust ingress and porosity so a replacement will be needed.
With the exception of careful undoing of the metal pipe, they're very straightforward to change, the Haynes BOL will help you.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
I'm with Jay on this, you need to find out what the actual problem is & then come back & let us know what you need. If you don't have the knowledge yourself then you need to get a mechanic who can diagnose the fault & not guess at what it might be. A leak can mean any number of things, so the diagnosis is critical, afterall, no point in finding a cylinder when its just a sphere seal which costs just £2. We're not having a go by the way, so don't worry about the lack of experience, we all have to start from somewhere.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
I have one here, but like has been said, you need to be certain that yours in knacked.
They think it's all over, it is now!
Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
Hi guys, i know you're not having a go and are here to help (as witnessed, reading past posts before joining). Without the knowledge/experience regarding citroen suspension cylinders i just started to panic and expected some quick 'make mend' wonder to appear! Guess i was just really looking at the worst scenario when sometimes you just don't need to
However i have since taken her to a garage, who's words were 'its definitely the cylinder weeping' (other-words knackered). Just now need to get hold of one, thanks to the guys that have one available.......what price would one item be?
Also how many labour hours do you think is realistic, in replacing one too?
Thanks.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
Is the car still driveable?
If you could get it to Wakefield either me or my mate would be able to sort it for you, probably on a Saturday.
It should only take an hour to put right, assuming all things went well, but do they ever
It might be worth getting a new boot and clip before fitting.

Re: PART WANTED!! Rear Hydraulic Cylinder.
You also may need a new hydraulic suspension feed-pipe if you need to change the hydraulic suspension/ram as that will be more than likely past its sell by date (If its still on the original one) ?ken newbold wrote:Is the car still driveable?

As you say Ken, you never know what else lies in wait when replacing/repairing these old vehicles !
Also nice to see you posting again !
