I'm pretty sure the diff is groaning on my Turbo D estate.
I was wondering if it is possible to remove the diff housing in situ without removing the gearbox itself ?

Its tight.....very tight.

I've done it once, but its amazing how much harder it is to get to the bolts in situ!

Nah, they just unbolt and fall off. One big cog inside.

If you strip the diff itself, you make a mess though.

Widget... are you sure? the BE gearbox diff is very robust, and the chances of it failing are remote.

What does fail though, and sounds just like a diff failing, is the long driveshaft intermediate bearing. It's well worth checking that first, as although you can remove the Differential crownwheel with the gearbox in situ, you cannot remove the pinion, and if either is worn, I'll bet it'll be the pinion rather than the crownwheel.

Thanks Chaps,

I think the intermediate bearing sounds like a plan to me...I'll let you know how things go ! That could be possible as the previous owner had a bit of a love affair with his pressure washer !!! :)

Widgit -

Dont hesitate to ask for advice removing the long driveaxle - most of the guys (and me) here have tried this job and know the pitfalls.

Once you have the complete driveaxle out - its best to use 2 breaker (or tyre) bars to lever back the bearing AND its retaining ring. As the bearing is moved back it gets easier to lever on it.
The idea is to save the retaining ring - as then you just need a new standard industrial bearing type 6006 (comes either as 2RS or ZZ variant for dust covers both sides) - available at some £3 at machine or motor factors.

That said - the diff bearings can be shot - but its more than likely to be the support bearing on the long RHS drive axle.
