What to expect.

Post by madjoiner »

Good afternoon.
I'm not new to citroens but I am new to bx's.
I've just been to look at a diesel rd 1.9.
The car was a 1988 model in silver with 155,000 on he clock.
General condition was ok,panels a few different silvers but gererally straight, drivers door pins quite worn, roof poorly repainted(I suspect rust around the window top and around the sunroof) One small drip to a rear suspension pipe and the rear cross member rusty but had just passed an MOT.
The vendor was a lovely man, having owned many classic citroens, seamed very honest.
I know you can't give me the all the answers I would like but at £650 I thought a little expensive?
What do you think?

Steve.

That does sounds a bit pricey. I'd also want to know when the timing belt was last replaced.

A rear suspension leak would concern me - there are quite a lot of pipes back there. Which one's leaking? You can bet that if the rear crossmember is rotten, there is corrosion elsewhere too - possibly boot floor and inner rear wings.

I know BX values have been rising of late, but only for tidy ones. I think a tatty runner is still £500 tops - and they still sometimes come up a air bit less than that.

I saw at at the Northern rally and could be made to look tidier with a bit work if you are bothered, the problem is with silver its a very awkward colour to match. The poor paint maybe where the laquer has given in and its gone very dull (common problem) and may be able to be cut it back enough to make it look tidy.

Agree with Ian; 500 tops for a tatty runner. If I was looking to buy another BX I'd be looking for no rust and good paint - most mechanicals are easy, cheap fixes assuming the engines sweet and EVERYTHING isn't completely bolloxed!

I havent driven it for a while but when I did it was a good drive. With any old BX watch for the ususal corrosion points which is what kills most cars off these days more than mechanical failure.

If you aren't sure what the usual corrosion points are, in no particular order:

Inner wings forward of the suspension turrets
Under the washer bottles
A posts around the door hinges
Both ends of the sills
Bottom of the B posts
Bottom of the C posts
Rear panel and boot floor on saloons
Rear box section on estates
Rear inner wings, particularly around the exhaust hanger.
Windscreen surround
Door bottoms

And on really bad examples, the rear subframe mounts.

If they're letting water in, the floors can go badly - for more details look at my 'Timex' blog!

Dear Madjoiner,
Two other points I think you should be also aware of, to check the clutch and the pedal box, for a worn out clutch and also for rot around the pedal box area.
Another thing definately check is that both rear wheels aren,t like this / \ and with that kind of mileage the both rear radius arm bearing could be shot.
My personal opinion, its alot of miles, tad dear and the thing I am most worried about is that how on earth did it pass an M.O.T with an LHM leak and rotten suspension pipes
I hope this helps

I'd happily accept £650 for my TGD estate, and that's very solid! New cambelt and a rear arm bearing too...

Sales pitch over, I'd agree that it sounds a little on the steep side so perhaps offer accordingly, IF you really like the car.

Thanks for all your help.
I'll take on board your areas to look at and check for corrosion.
Thanks for the offer of the estate Mat, it looks a great car, but hatchback would be my first choice.
