Oh dear, I don't wish to put the mockers on things but it doesn't sound good.
Could be blocked rad? water pump, or the cooling fan hasn't worked or as you say thermostat.

Rad not getting hot at all? Head gasket. I hope not but I'd stake a pint on it. Gas pressure builds up in head and circulation stops. Took me months to work out why but that is almost certainly it.
