Why a steel bonnet
Why does a TZD 1.9 have a steel bonnet and most of the rest have plastic? Is it to have more mass to attempt to quieten the engine noise down? Seems rather illogical otherwise.

Re: Why a steel bonnet
It's not as clear-cut as that; it seems to be that very early and late cars sometimes had steel bonnets, although at this age who knows what's been swapped around over the years? Plus it's possible that it was cheaper for aftermarket panel suppliers to make pattern steel bonnets rather than tool up to mould them from plastic, so a steel bonnet may signify it's been replaced at some point. Why does a TZD 1.9 have a steel bonnet and most of the rest have plastic?
It's been suggested that diesels are more likely to have the steel bonnet to help noise reduction, but not sure whether that's a fact or just a coincidence.

Mk1 Diesels had Steel Bonnets and the very last ones aswell, the steel bonnet does seem to insulate the diesel clatter better!

Re: Why a steel bonnet
We've come to the conclusion in the past that there is not set pattern for this; I've had at least 6 varying diesel BX's with most variants from nearly new to now and none of them have had a metal bonnet, the only metal bonnet I have personally ever seen was on Matthews (Mulley) TXD, I recall being shocked how heavy it was to lift.

Re: Why a steel bonnet
So can anyone explain the TXi's petrol model steel bonnet?
Doesnt look pattern and the car looks original at the front end. (i.e. no evidence of accident damage)

Re: Why a steel bonnet
Of my 2 Athenas, one has a short nose GRP and the other steel. Ones Jan 91 the other Mar 91. My own personal guess is to do with an extra EU regulation on RF etc from the HT leads and alternator 'noise'. Usually if you can create a Faraday cage around the offending item it will then be 'quiet' when testing for interference.
The radiator trim flap is different and the grille also to suit either shape bonnet. To me the steel one is definitely heavier to lift from the front but when you take the whole thing off its not so much heavier. In fact the steel one is still loose as I haven't reattached it as the hinges are bent, but having had both off recently I was surprised it wasn't heavier.
You could always try an aluminium variant to see if it would pass the current crash tests!

Re: Why a steel bonnet
My K reg GTi has a steel bonnet. With the sound deadening attached to the underside. My old 14 had a plastic bonnet with no sound deadening just a strange metal mesh.

Re: Why a steel bonnet
My 14 had the same thing - I guess it's to do with the RF interference, as it had an earth strap on it.
