In the year 1992 Citroen changed from the plastic to the metal bonnet for all BX models.

All 1993 and 1994 (Break/Estate) models have a metal bonnet!

/\ as small batches of steel bonnets were cheaper/easier to produce for the then limited production IIRC

Note the year 1992 - when catalytic converters became (essentially) mandatory. Bet the RFI and MRI issues were also tightened probably in the same legislation. This would account for a total switch to steel bonnets, hence my hypothesis. Might also have been a sound issue ie X Db at so many metres from car etc. Just not that familiar with the details of auto legislation at that time.
There is some really stupid stuff currently on trailer boards (try building your own) and marine trailers, plus marine construction ie licensing of amateur builders!

BTW Peugeot Rover and Ford were all for lean burn and no Cat - they were right, sledgehammer to crack a nut. We assume that all vehicles with similar size engines are now at least 30-50% more economic and lighter...

I'm not sure steel bonnets are cheaper to produce but it will depend on numbers however SMC requires much less press weight just controlled (limited) heat in the tool. Much less finishing on the SMC ones though the mesh had to be added.

As have the two 1993 TZD Turbo estates I've had - I wonder whether Bobby meant that all 1993 and 1994 models have a metal bonnet if they have a long nosed bonnet?

Tim !
How many times have we had this debate

Gloria, a MK 1 diesel, has a plastic bonnet.

Andy
It's an auto so has a short nosed one hence why its plastic.
NOT true/conclusive scratch...

My two MK1's on 'C' plate (both long-nose types) the 19 RD had a steel bonnet and the 19 DTR had the plastic/GRP type (Both were the same colour as your 19 DTR you've recently sold) !

Also IYCR the 'K' reg. White 19 TXD which you had the wing and a door from (for your St.Tropez and TZi) had the short nose version manufactured from steel which 'Arctic Steel' had (No pun intended)

More debates from the past in THIS thread !

I'll go with Doc's explanation (Which sums it all-up the best) :?

P.S. I still have available a short nose bonnet (which was from a TZD Turbo) manufactured in plastic/GRP, send me a PM if interested ?

Hoom yah! Stirred a bit of debate there. I am not sure I am any the wiser, other than finding out there are short and long noses. Hope that does not end up like Easter Island and the long noses getting blown away.

So here is a prefect question to add to the theorized register of BX. Eventually statistics might reveal some clarity.

All mine have placky jobs, the 1.4 with Faraday cage earthed chicken wire job, save the n/a TZD 1.9, Homer.

The type of bonnet that was fitted on mk2's would appear to relate to whatever supply was avaialble to citroen at the time the car was being made on the production line. There is absolutely no point in trying to work out why this one or that one was fitted. As an example, i have 2 K plate cars, the txd has metal, the tzd turbo has plastic, they are both diesels, so the noise rfi interference ideas are rubbish i'm afraid. My H reg 8valve Gti had plastic.

I personally would prefer a nice white plastic one for the txd, its only got 71bhp so by fitting a bloody heavy bonnet to one of the least powerful engines isn't really the best idea :(

Here we go!

ONLY my 1992 TXD has a Metal Bonnet, its also a short nose and it is also an English import (export from the UK). I was alsways under the impression that Metal Bonnets were rare fitted to Diesels or after market types for accident repairs.

However I encountered a Metal Bonnet on a 1991 19 TZS where my 19TZS did not that was being scrapped from rear end damage and the single owner swore that it was original fitting. This was ironic because the numberplate sequance was the one before mine therfore registered on the same date in 1993. Both had been hanging around the citron dealerships yard in Auckland for a couple of years. So who knows whay this was how it was.

Anways does it matter? Metal bonnets tend to Rust and after what Mulley wrote I am tempted to swap it with the plastic short nose one on the TZS.

It does not matter.

My interest was related to the 1.9 oiler as they seem to have steel bonnets where as the 1.7 oiler has plastic. Yet the 1.9 has a smaller fuel tank than the 1.7, which suggests a sensitivity to all up weight. The steel bonnet feels a lot heavier so I would prefer a larger fuel tank, please.

Is the N/A 1.9 noiser than the 1.7 turbo version. I am tempted to say it is.

Maybe Citroen expected the 1.7 to be driven a lot harder than I drive it. Sort of 1.9 for better off peasants and 1.7 for Parisians to belt down the peage to the country pad for the weekend.

So would I, well it certainly is at low revs not really noticed if they are noisier on the motorway though, either way I think we've discounted any connection between noise levels and bonnet type.
