My interest was related to the 1.9 oiler as they seem to have steel bonnets where as the 1.7 oiler has plastic. Yet the 1.9 has a smaller fuel tank than the 1.7, which suggests a sensitivity to all up weight. The steel bonnet feels a lot heavier so I would prefer a larger fuel tank, please.

Is the N/A 1.9 noiser than the 1.7 turbo version. I am tempted to say it is.

Maybe Citroen expected the 1.7 to be driven a lot harder than I drive it. Sort of 1.9 for better off peasants and 1.7 for Parisians to belt down the peage to the country pad for the weekend.
Really? As far as I was aware the 1.9 has a 66 litre tank as it has the extra 14 litre expansion tank sitting in the wheel arch? I could be wrong but after getting 60 litres in the TXD once I dont think so.

Not sure about the TXD, but the RD certainly doesn't have the extra tank.

My 14 had a bigger tank than many thought it should, and I remember the adverts from the like of Audi in the 90's making a big thing about how far theircars would go on a tank of fuel (without actually saying how much fuel it used!) so maybe Citroen fitted the extra tank to more models later on in production in order to make the fuel range more competitive.

My TGS has a 52 litre tank. Made in 1990, i believe the whole range went over to a 66 litre tank from 1991. Some models such as valvers had it straight away. All my MK1s have the 52 ltr tank.

I think all the range started with 52lt except the 14's which from memory were around 46lt - they had certainly switched to 53lt by 1990.

What you have to remember is that these are French cars built by French people. Trying to apply logic to discern the why's and wherefore's of their construction - consequently - is a fools errand.

The answer to the question, 'why has my TGD got a metal bonnet' is 'why not?' I'm happy with that. :D

Yet it is curious that even where it is known that a conclusion cannot be reached, people like to debate these issues ad infinitum judging from this thread and the ones that have gone before on the same subject.

Sort of, anyway - my 14TGE had a 52 ltr tank, but that may have been fitted at a later date!

Getting back to the noise question, i believe the n/a is noisier, not because of the bonnet, the gearing is lower so its revving more at the same speed as a TD & because there is a turbo, that acts as a silencer so it is quieter because of that.

Metal bonnet and plastic bonnet have the same sound proofing material pad installed, so I doubt its to do with noise.

The TXD has a different one to my TZD, but then again you've got to make some room for the intercooler on one of them ;)
