Here is a tale to renew your faith in MOT testers

Post by Jaba »

With the engine transplant from the TD estate I am breaking completed into the #Hurricane it was time to brave an MOT.

Problem: Although the engine had been working well in the estate when I ran it in the Hurricane there were clouds of smoke being ejected. Worse there was black oil dripping out of the wastegate spindle and from the exhaust pipe flange too.
It was as though the exhaust side of the turbo was full of oil which could not be burned off without an italian tuneup. But the car was not taxed or MOTed so this was not possible for me to do legally.

I booked the MOT and asked the guy if he could do a smoke test first before the test as the car had been off the road for 4 years. No problem he said, in fact why dont you take it for a run at high revs for 15 minutes, here are my trade plates for you to put on the car. Tell the police you a working for the garage if you are stopped.

Result : The clouds of smoke gradually disappeared completely on the tune up run. And I am the proud owner of an MOT certificate.

I reckon that is service beyond the call of duty.

For once the BX did not disappoint.

There are some good MOT places round here. Long may it remain so. So with the Hurricane nigh on done does your wife get her garden back with the Estate gone to the happy car park in the sky?

The garage where I MOT the XM are very good. The MOT tester did his apprenticeship at a Citroën garage. Plus there is usually a Willys Jeep in having some work done, which is a good sign.
