It was indeed! Sadly the whole thing is looking like a big fail right now. The minor problem is that my 'perfect' stereo have an annoying bug whereby you select the display to show track information, only to have to re-select it next time you turn it on. But the major flaw is that it only supports iPods and iPhones fully, letting you search by album/artist/genre etc; but for a standard USB drive you just have one huge folder of MP3 files visible. Despite mine all being organised by artist and album.

Browsing 3000+ tunes one at a time to find the one I want is not my idea of fun, neither is it particularly safe when driving! So back to the 3.5 mm aux in :( I'm wondering though whether there is some kind of software iPod emulator that Android phones can use...?

Can't beat a tape player!! The XM has it's standard Philips cassette player, with a CD changer in the boot. I've got one of those cassette adapters that allows the iPod to be played through the cassette deck.

But what's the quality like? I've only ever used one, and the sound was significantly worse than from a cassette. Plus it doesn't get round the issue of controlling the music player - I just want something I can easily and safely select a tune from. So far I think the best option is a messy pile of CDs on the passenger seat!

Never used an iPod though, so don't know how easy/logical they are to use. I'd still imagine you'd need to stop though, at least in the eyes of the law. I certainly can't do that on my new phone, as it auto locks after a period of time and requires unlocking before you can even skip it on a track.

Mat my solution to all this is:
With iPod set it to select tracks randomly, shuffle I think App ple call it. So I get surprised consistently by good tracks I didn't even know I had.

In my modern head unit which accepts an SD card only I found the only way to get it to shuffle was to put a couple of tracks outside of any album or artist folder and it then just selects tracks for me. This might be worth a try on your input device (USB?).

Rocking into oblivion.

The sound quality is dependant on the quality of the cassette adapter. The best ones I've used are Belkin and Philips. As Jaba said, either set the iPod to shuffle or compile your own playlists.

Can't you just burn a shed load of mp4 tracks onto a regular cd & play them that way?

Clearly not...

That Clarion looks strangely familiar, I wonder who'd buy such a gaudy modern looking unit without even MW capability? Not a bad price actually, though I still wanted to hold onto the CD player, I'm clearly not ready to let go of the past just yet.

I've not yet tried a USB drive rather than the phone - it may be able to read that better and show up the folder names? But failing that I'll just put it on shuffle through all the tracks; it'll be like a radio station with no adverts which only plays tunes I like! And I'll use the aux in connection when I specifically want to listen to a particular track.

Not sure what a CD's capacity is in terms of MP3 tracks, but if it's a lot, say 100+ then the same problems of picking out a particular track still apply :( And if it's less I'll be back to having loads of CDs!

This was why I went solid state, there is an upper limit to how many times I'm willing to burn the same CD due to death by scratch. The daily car has never seen a CD in its slot, between SD, MDI and Bluetooth there are plenty of options.

I've had 800 mp3 tracks on a regular CD, but I think you have to drop the quality to 128kbps

Because what else is there to do after 7pm? Its okay if the lovely Jo is on, and i find myself more and more tolerant of Bob Harris Country, but for the rest of the week you have to sit in silence!

Janice Long and Alex Lester are worth listening to on the graveyard shift. Can't be doing with Vanessa Feltz.

I use a Sony cassette adapter and it's pretty good on sound quality, only thing I have to remember is to put my phone in aeroplane mode otherwise you get network interference, but it's radio 2 otherwise, bit of Chris on the way to work, Steve at lunch and drive time on the way home 8)
