Geoff Capes Garage tour.

Post by Stinkwheel »

Well, i assume he did some sort of Cit specialist visit just to tighten the accumulator sphere on the Red TizzeeDee.

It was not just tight, it was 'flipping' tight. (i would normally use a different F word to flipping you understand)
So tight, in fact, that the sphere removal tool I have (band type with the two bolts for tightening) is now very much not round, it is changed though, so thats nice.

Appears i need to do the bash the ball bearing to re-seat it trick at some point though, tick is a bit too quick still, annoyingly.

Ugh. Frustrating. The 'low tick time' is what happened to me with Timex, though the ball bearing trick didn't cure it.

The rear spheres were also incredibly tight. A proper Citroen tool and a very big hammer (and some specialist know how) got them freed, but I was a bit nervous with the bloke lying underneath a heavily jacked BX with no axle stands, while battering the hell out of the sphere tool!

I think over time the rear ones can get properly stuck, but the accumulator, no real need to be anything other than firmly hand tightened and theoretically should stay that way (in my past experience)

Did your car come from Notts, Lincs or Newbury? My theory is that this is where Mr Capes, sphere twister extraordinary, hangs out as that's where my car used to live. Either that or whomsoever markets the removal tools is sneaking up to BX and tweaking there spheres. Oh Musses. Titter yee not!

As recently mentioned the tightness is probably related to the sealing rubbers not being lubricated before they were fitted rather than the actual shear force applied when fitted, dry seals stick solid and need masses amount of force to allow the sphere / filter to start turning.

ahh..yes i remember those days, cold chisel big hammer, bigger hammer, bigger chisel, broken strap wrench, chain wrench not long enough nowadays i am a bit wiser and lucky enough to have occasional access to a lift, at which point i now make a point of cracking off the rear spheres and then nipping them up a bit every time its up on the lift, this makes home servicing much easier and quieter, i only ever hand tighten mine fully then just nip it up a bit with a pair of big grips i picked up at a booty for a few quid. i have just a few days ago done all 4 sus spheres on the tzd in about 1/2 hr.

Seenow, in the opposite, used to have access to ramps, but now have to grovel onthe floor with axle stands.
must buy a property with a 2post lift space ;)

i have adapted a pair of regular car ramps mounted on 8 inch think timber planks, just gives enough extra height for under body work when working at home.or buy a property with a double garage or barn.
