Pair of excellent Philips H4 bulbs

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I have an unopened pack of 2 x Philips X-treme Vision H4 bulbs. In my experience these are superb - had them in my GTi (forgot to remove before she was scrapped do'oh!).

I don't need them for my ZX as that needs H7s... Anyone got £15 for them (won't find 'em cheaper) - I'll be at the CXM this weekend and will have them with me.

So, yellow dosnt do it for you then Phil? Ime sure they can be made as bright. I have difficulty finding some that stay yellow without the heat burning off the colour.

No worries, I would prefer yellow fog lights as opposed to headlights in a BX... And yet, if I was in a GS I would drool over a set of yellow headlights... Certainly all part of that era.

As it is finding H4 yellow lights that give a good (and safe) light is as far as I am aware a difficult proposition! But I am hoping I will be proved wrong! (For the sake of GS drivers if nothing else lol :) )

I got some bulb caps from eBay. This is apparently how the French used to do it. This means that you can use decent regular bulbs, like Philip has for sale. It is important to get decent bulbs too as these do cut down the light output.

Here's similar to what I have: http://bit.ly/XuADGq" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you search "H4 yellow cap" on eBay there are also some yellow caps that have an open end instead of closed. I can't comment on these as I haven't tried them. Maybe they let the heat out better but may be a bit less yellow

You might already be aware of these, hence the "safe" comment. At the moment my blue BX has these caps but I can't see too well at night. I does have shit bulbs under the caps however and probably a poor connection somewhere.

Thanks bud, i did try those once but they cracked because of the heat too.

I have a set of yellow H4s on my TGS and they seem to be very yellow and bright too. Can see very well at night but those in my others are not so bright.

Now this reminds me to check out my bulb stash. I had a load of H4 spot bulbs but not sure which. Probably the wrong ones for BX as could be earlier but might suit prior models. Also various other oddities cleared from our local Simca Garage when it closed down. Maybe a boot sale table next year at a suitable venue. Have not bought a normal bulb for years with this lot. Trouble is they keep reinventing them.

I use Osram Nightbreakers, they are brilliant, similar type to Phil's bulbs that he's selling. I forgot who i was talking to @ Stratford, i think it was the chappie who had the valver with morette's who i suggested to try the osrams as he thought the light output was quite poor in his car. That should hopefully do the trick :) It'd be interesting to see what difference relay's would make, Mat, fancy making up some for me for beer/parts or wedge?

:) I'm sure I could knock one up...shouldn't take too long to wire up something. Unless you want something a little more complicated which keeps the dim-dip arrangement!

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wonder if there'd be a market for a simple plug-in kit?

But to see whether much voltage is being lost in the wiring/switch, set a meter to measure voltage, put one probe on a positive terminal on the back of the bulb, and the other on the positive battery terminal. In an ideal world you'd get a zero voltage difference between battery and bulb, but in real life that won't be the case. How much drop you measure will give you a clue about the condition of things.
