From comments on Facebook it looks like she is rescued. I look forward to hearing how she gets on, this car belonged to a friend of mine until recently.

Well done though Matt/Charlotte, I know Jonathan was rather upset to part with it but is a Citroen fan and had a lovely AX, Xantia and maybe after a earlier BX with the more squidgy seats as the ones in the TX didnt suit him, seems he has a spinal issue after a horse landed on his brand new AX whilst he was driving!!

Thanks Tim,

It is well worth saving though a bit cosmetically challenged. Jonathan is a great bloke with a very nice AX still :)

XM corner

Post by Philip Chidlow »

Well... why not?

Seeing as how there's no way I was going to swing getting a BX (even if I could find a suitable one) as the main Family Transport / Continental Tourer and so when I spotted a post on FB, advertising an XM in need of a home... one thing led to another and for the price of a knackered old BX TD I seem to have got in there first, and secured it for collection in the New Year.

No doubt it will consume money but with some (continued, I have to say) TLC, I think it should serve us well. Even though it is a manual. And a petrol... ;)

I'm guessing it's the one that a customer of Rob Moss was flogging to buy a 'Vauxhall Ashtray'. At that price you can't really go wrong Phil. Good luck with it mate. :)
@Mat. IIRC it's the 2.0i 16v.

Yes it is that one, it's a 172k mile 2.0i 16v manual SX. 1998, extensive SH including 60k miles on the rebuilt (by Chevronic) top end (thanks to HGF). Timing belt and tensioners done about 28k miles/3 years ago. Apart from routine servicing at Rob Moss's it's recently had new battery, starter motor, accumulator sphere, strut tops, pads and a set of tyres. It's taxed until April, I think, and MOT to May (or the other way round!?). There are some battle scars but nothing too bad I believe. Rust doesn't appear to be an issue otherwise. Being the SX it has manual rear windows and in this case no air con, but the sunroof works and doesn't leak. It has steelies not alloys (but given time I might consider).

Things that will need looking at (of which I'm aware having spoken to the very pleasant owner):
Radio doesn't work. It's an aerial connection issue apparently.
Pixel displays don't seem to work, although I'm not sure it applies to both sides, and being an SX would it even have them? Dunno.
Remote for the central locking isn't working.
There's a crack in the rear bumper trim strip.
Adjusting the firmness of the suspension setting (normal/sport) isn't particularly apparent, so maybe the old diode replacement therapy is needed?

Having spoken to Cheryl at Chevronic, I don't believe there's anything else that need urgent attention, but being an XM that doesn't mean there isn't!

I hope to pick it up shortly after Christmas.

I can vouch for the e-crofting diode repair/by-pass fix. I fitted one of these to my XM earlier this year and certainly feel a difference, so I suspect one of the diodes had packed up.

The aerial issue. I was getting a small amount of water coming in through the interior light/sunroof controls overhead console thingy. I removed this and found the aerial base had badly corroded. New aerial base and aerial plus a dollop of waxoyl and no more leaks and improved radio reception. New aerial and base was a tenner from Citroën main dealer.

Thanks Mark. From what I can gather this car has been set up for in car phone and maybe another radio and there are maybe at least one other 'foreign' aerial (and wiring) so I think it got confusing when fitting the newer CD head unit. The guy has the original unit so I might retro fit that.

It'll all become a little clearer when I can see the car.

Won't be getting the car until late January, early February, but that's not a problem One less thing to worry about over the Xmas period!

I have been wondering about 1998 SX specification... manual rear windows, I know. No second glass rear screen I think. No computer displays to worry about either? Velour interior and sunroof, no air con. Sun shade on parcel shelf? Anyone know what to expect - and what not to?
