engine blues

Post by Phil Brook »

It seems my beautiful 16TGS auto engine is kaput! Hoped it was just valve seals but it seems the bottom engine is goosed! Does anyone know of a decent engine going? The car is far too good to lose !

Goosed in what way?

Crank re-grind and new big end shells are not as expensive as people seem to think if you find a good local engineering works :-)

Your engine can be fully reconditioned to factory spec with 12 month EU wide warranty by Vege. Just googly them. They confirmed not long ago they can do your own engine. They do not have exchange units but will do your own. They are in Cheshire so not a million miles away. I had an exchange unit and was very happy with it so a satisfied customer, with no connection otherwise. Alternatively do as Stinkwheel suggests. I had a similar problem when my old one threw a rod at 54k... good car but I needed to get to Italy a month later with boat on back. That was pretty much the running in trip, and faultless.

I contacted Vege and they have a short engine block in stock for £225.00 +vat. They have to import it from Holland so will be 3-4 days. I spoke to them and they say it is a reconditioned unit so should be just the job!. Thanks for the info I will post the outcome when all is securely fitted

Great news that Phil,

Do you know if they will be taking your old engine and reconditioning it?

I only ask as i myself have a BX 16Txi that needs some work, i was going to just do the head to re-fresh it but i would possibly like to put a re-con engine into. Maybe vege will have re-conned your old lump by the time i need one :)

That sounds like a good price for a short engine.

That sounds more like a 'we've got one in stock and we're worried we won't shift it kind of price, as surely it can't even cover the labour on re-manufacturing a short engine.

It does sound like a bit of a 'clearance' bargain. In 2004 when I got my exchange XU52C engine it was £870 and came from Holland so they must have a 'Euro' depot/base there. I was also informed that I was lucky they still had one as it was such an 'old' engine!. Hope you get the unit you need - it should be a good one. BTW it will run very, very hot for the first 500-1000 miles so make sure your cooling system and thermostats are spot on. Oh and do an oil change somewhere in that mileage to get any swarf out, mine was very clean to be fair.

Recon H van engine - you'll be lucky to get a crank for that!

Yeah I know. Fortunately I've got a spare or two, plus there are dozens of dead engines sitting in a barn not three miles from here....

My plan is to build the closest thing to a new engine I can – I've got new old stock cylinder head, camshaft, pistons and liners (from an ID19 so higher compression, which is nice), various other bits... One day I'll turn all that into a really nice motor. A NOS crank would be nice though!
