Dunno about the Ford Galaxy. The old man had a Galaxy 500 (company car!) many years ago - about 6-8mpg if I remember right! Petrol must have been incredibly cheap in the States pre '73..

If you really want a BX as your daily drive then IMO the solution to running BXs, which are now approaching trentagenarian is to have TWO.
This is so you always have another to fall back on when the daily hack provides troublesome. Using my logic this then gives plenty of time to sort out the failed BX in time for the next time the daily hack grinds to a halt for whatever reason.

When you consider what these cars cost compared with the absolutely enormous costs of buying and running a depreciating modern <5years old car it makes obvious economic sense if nothing else.

I think a better solution is to have 3. One for driving, one as back up, and the other one to pinch spares from if you really get stuck. That gives you the minimum amount of time with no backup, leaving you to find parts at leisure to keep the spares car running.

A similar principle to RAID...

Aah, if we are to mix metaphors then have you not heard that RAID 5 is the most prevalent ................

I've seen that car knocking around here. I spoke to the owner once and he was pretty miffed off with the misfire. It would appear the fault persists... Not for me regardless, anyway; not an ideal car for everyday use and holidays especially as it'd never be garaged... Which would be a shame. Nice spot though Mr. Mulls

Actually managed some ZX fettling time today. Replaced the headlight units with brand new Lucas ones, new bulbs (fitted Philips Almost-Blind-Oncoming-Drivers ones lol) and repaired some wiring. Actually with the headlight protectors on the effect is slightly less dazzling, but still much better. Took the opportunity to treat a little rust behind the lights and generally greased/oiled around there. Found what I think are connectors for fog lights - that means the wiring's already in place maybe? If so, that's good because we plan to fit a pair of Hellas under the bumper in the recesses (which only need cutting out).

Then had the tyres replaced with Riken Snowtime 2 cold-weather tyres, so all set for winter.

Having just filled the ZX I I can now announce the results of an exhaustive and thoroughly scientific test... (Sort of)

Driven on similar routes and a similar mix of town and distance driving and with similar loads most of the time (ok not very scientific!) I filled up first with Asda diesel and no additives and got 47.8 mpg, I then put a recommended dose of Millers in it as I filled up next time. That tankful I got 49.2 mpg. Then, the next tankful I used Redex diesel additive. Ok it might be that the Millers had got to work, but I just calculated I got 50.3 mpg.

Draw your own conclusions but given the car feels nice and perky at the moment, I might suggest a dose of Redex now and then might be worthwhile. Interestingly Redex boast a NEW formula... (Which looks a dirty grey liquid).

Having just swapped my Michelin Energys for Cold weather tyres it'll be interesting to see what effect they have on mpg.

Criky, that was a decent price for a tidy turbo 2! If your life is serene and trouble free - buy a CX - that'll give you something to cry about. :D

Indeed. As a practical and reliable family runabout a chieftain tank would be a far more sensible option.
