Finally, and probably the biggest thing against it, was it was LHD. Personally I have no problem with LHD, I have a couple of LHD cars in the collection, and ran a succession of LHD vans as daily transport for years, but it does put people off. Unfortunately those few of us who were willing to take it on were unable due to lack of space or money (or both).

I believe that while the Valvers, and to a lesser extent GTi's will always be popular, the type of models in the rest of the range that people want will change over the next few years. Some friends have seen this with CX's - GTi Turbos have always been popular, as have pallas models, but it seems DTR Turbo Safaris have fallen out of favour to be replaced by mid to high spec petrol saloons, as the use of the cars switch from high mileage daily drivers to cossetted show cars.

Im in totally the same camp as you mike, LHD is no worry and neither are 'odd' specs but at the end of the day we can tell folks their car is worth this or that all day long but that often bears little resemblance to what they actually get for it, because there is still a limited market for cars needing work.

Id rather be totally realistic and err on the side of caution than build possible false hopes, if thats a fair way of putting it.

The trouble with squirreling away a car & hoping it goes up in value is that how long do you have to wait. Personally, unless the car was low mileage, & immaculate, i don't think putting it away will necesserily increase its value. It's never going to have the same market as a mk1 Escort, & who would have thought a decent one know can command £30k? The BX has slowly increased in value, with the odd few fetching good money, but equally, when someone has bought an expensive one, when they've come to sell it, they make a loss or can't end up selling it as no one wants to pay it. Supply & demand & mainly desire, its a fickle market. How many times have we seen over the last couple of years a decent car go cheap, & then an absolute shed command much more than anyone though possible?

I'd suggest you get the car mot'd, make a few hundred quid in the process & let the new owner take on looking after the car, even they will probably pile more money into it than it will ever be worth, but as long as its saved & someone is enjoying driving the car, thats surely the best outcome. Buying BX's to do up & make a profit on isn't going to happen anytime soon. Another 5 years when even more have been scrapped & the survivors are needing more & more attention to keep on the roads, then the prices may start to creep up some more.

All the best with whichever plan you decide, look forward to reading how you are getting on, infact a blog showing what you've done may very well increase your chances of a sale as the car then has a bit of provenence as lots of people know about it.

And it was in Ipswich, a long way from some potential rescuers. I bet if it was just down the road some folks would have made 'arrangements'.

Waiting to rebuild a potential classic only works well if you buy all the parts it needs to do the job to store with it. In five years the prices might have moved up but the price and availability of spares will definitely have gone up and down correspondingly. This is the mistake so many 'investors' make. You see these on eBay every week. Dug out of hibernation, looking sad and needing spares no longer cheaply available. Result, its worth little more than when it was put away and often less as it got worse due to poor storage.
Each of my stashed cars that I plan to restore has a dedicated load of spares to firstly make it a complete car and then to make it a complete and working car (as near as). Thus I have the outright cost of the car prior to restoration pretty much nailed. I can thus work to a budget and know if I can obtain a suitable margin for my effort. If I choose to sell out and not do the job very often the margin to be made is in the spares tucked away. With BX I think you need one of perhaps 4 or 5 models, and need to buy very well, to expect a reasonable return as a rebuild for profit. As an option to bangernomics, however, they work well. They are good cars at the right price, will provide characterful service and looked after offer cheap, nil or possible profitable usage as transport. That means it needs to be on the road in service to really square the equation. I can think of many cars I could restore for a much better pay day for the same effort.

If your happy with a Ford Escort, etc. at a vast price, then your easily pleased and you have my condolences. There are so many more interesting, challenging and better cars to own as classics or racing cars. But sheep run together, never really knowing why.
