Citroen Winter Check

Post by Philip Chidlow »

For £30 it seems like a good way to at least get an informed condition report as well as get your fluids topped up and battery tested. I thought about getting the ZX done at my friendly local dealership (Quest, who know me!) and find out what needs looking at. Brakes and tyres are new and it's just had an oil/filter change... but it's other bits (in the inaccessible underneath area) that might be worth knowing about.

I don't have anywhere to work on my car at the moment and no ramps so as they'll let me into the workshop around the back to have a look too, I might as well. Not for everyone I agree.

from my past experiences Citroen dealerships don't know jack,

sounds like MR clutches "free" brake test

Indeed. Launch cheap offer, then clobber for parts/labour. If the brakes are new, what are they going to check exactly? An anti-freeze tester costs buttons and if the battery starts the car on a cold morning, it's ok.

and me, it is just a sales pitch o get you in their workshop so they can give you quotes for work that may or may not be required.. if your brakes are at 50% wear they will tell you you need a reline with new discs, exhaust looking a bit rusty and needs replacing etc etc.

Maybe because I know the guys there, they also helped me by sponsoring the 2012 event - and in particular my team (the Red Baron). I think you are all being a little cynical*. After all, the T&Cs say you don't have to buy anything else off them: It's a no obligation deal. If they say I need new gaiters or whatever, then it's my choice what to do and where to get the work done if I'm not able to do myself. Anyone who blindly follows the dealer's advice and forks out for the privilege only has themselves to blame if they feel ripped off. It calls for a degree of intelligence and judgement. Like many things in life.

And as it happens, I don't have the facilities or space to lift a car up and work underneath. But I guess a lot of BX, ZX or XM owners don't.

Oh come come Philip - everyone knows that BXers are renowned for their bonhomie, infinite largesse and willingness to extend the benefit of the doubt to all. :D

Only kidding. I couldn't wish for a better bunch comrades even if some share similar characteristics to Victor Meldrew :) ;)

They don't rely on catching every fish, it's purely a sales gimmick which ever way you want to look at it Phil.

What's wrong with a Citroen sales gimmick? So long as it only catches the stupid out? Sorry, that's a bit simplistic. But Citroen dealerships are under pressure from Citroen UK and ultimately their PSA bosses so let's have sympathy (maybe that IS too stronger word!) because I'd rather see a Citroen dealer than none.

Also £30 for me to get my 18 gear old ZX up on a ramp so I can be SHOWN why might need looking at isn't bad in my view. It'd cost me more than that for a round trip to Andy's lol ;)

Will a Citroen main dealer let you near the car when it's on the ramps? I though most main dealers wouldn't let you in their workshops for H&S reasons?

As I mentioned I know Quest so they will. Others probably won't unless they are at all enthusiastic about the old car:) worth asking.
