If they are the original, then i'll guarantee that they are rubbish, technology has thankfully moved on with speakers.

Ok, I shall budget for new speakers eventually but for now I think us rather get the system up and running as a whole and upgrade over time.
Matt/Jaba, do you use the controls on the sub much or was it a case of tuning to your liking and leaving put?

I don't alter it every day, but occasionally I find that the gain I have set to get the 'best' (for me) sound for music means that speech can be a little boomy. All the controls for the amp/sub unit are on a flying lead so I've mounted the control on the front of the trim under the seat. That way I can just twiddle the knob to suit what I'm listening to. The actual cut-off frequency I just leave set to 120 Hz.

I don't twiddle just set it once and then forget it. I then change the bass/loudness settings on the head unit for speech which as Mat says booms when the sound is set for rocking music.

I do have the remote accessible by the hand brake but its a tiny thing to be setting up and down all the time.

I've pretty much set up then left the settings on my system too - there's a super bass button on the head unit I'm currently using that gets switched on and off depending on what I'm listening to but that's about it.

The set up is slightly different on mine as it's a mk1 (no door speakers) but I have tweeters in the dash, the original Mk1 sub under the dash, a pair of 6x9's on top of the rear inner wings and an active bass tube behind the back seat - those with me in Scotland can testify to the sound!

I'll fit s similar system in my other 2, although the 4x4, being a mk2 will get a decent pair of door speakers!

2 comments I'd add is that I've found correct positioning of speakers (where possible) are more important than power, and that if you fit speakers on the rear arches like I do, you get a lot of volume through the air vents to the outside of the car too.

An important consideration is to ensure the speakers are all connected the same way so they are not out of phase. If they are this cancels out a lot of the bass. I actually test mine with a battery at the head unit end and watch that the speaker cones all move the same way.

A John Lee Hooker song comes to mind ; Boom boom boom boom, I like it like that.

I tried one of those mon ami. The sound is cleaner slightly than the Clarion But it doesnt fit under the seat so I decided to sell it on.

But whichever way you do it just keep rocking.

Im looking to put a small amp under the passenger seat and need a 12v power supply, would the power supply to the old DIN plug in the rear be up to the job ?

I can't see the link (not a member) but yes to your question about the power supply - it'll certainly supply 15 amps or so. Convenient earthing point under the passenger seat too. I wonder if it would benefit from a heavier duty cable to keep the voltage more stable (you can see it fluctating slightly with the beat) but I've not yet tried this to see whether it actually makes any noticable difference to the sound!
