BX GTi 4x4 For Sale

Post by Ian_Fearn »

Yes that’s right folks I’m looking to sell my BX 4x4. For those of you who don’t know this car, its got full history pretty much from day 1.

In its first life it was used to tow caravans and is fitted with a genuine Citroen towbar. When the transmission gave up for the first time it was replaced by a Citroen dealer at an enormous cost.

The car then went on with general servicing and various bits and bobs replaced typical to the BX until it failed its MOT on exhaust emissions. The Citroen dealer then replaced the engine with a brand new unit around 20k ago. I don’t personally think the engine is ran in as it still feels quite tight.

The clutch then wore out and the car was advertised on ebay where the previous owner bought it. He had the clutch replaced but didn’t have the splined shaft replaced against the advice of the specialist who did it. This is where I originally saw the car when it was sat at my local Citroen specialist waiting for the work to be done. I got the specialist to enquire if the car was for sale but the owner declined my offer.

The clutch was replaced and the car went back to its owner near London. He cosseted the car and being a member of the citroen car club only took it to shows and kept it garaged.

Not long later the inevitable happened and the splined shaft stripped making the car immobile. It went back to the specialist in Derbyshire where I saw the car again and I again made an offer which was declined.

At this point another clutch was fitted, splined shaft, transfer box, struts, cambelt…. Etc etc, was replaced at a very reasonable price. I then met the owner for the first time at a citroen car club meet in august 2005 where again I made an offer. After he realised I am a genuine enthusiast that would give the car the love it justifies he agreed to sell it to me, albeit after I offered him less than the 1500quid he wanted for it and he failed to sell it for that on ebay.

I’ve now had it since last October and I’ve not really used it that much. When the MOT ran out I did a check up on it and found the propshaft bearing to be U/S so I’ve now replaced that. It could do with a couple of drop links which I’ve got but not fitted. Also it might benefit from an upper speedo cable but its only what you’d expect from a BX!

Bodywork wise the car is very good, with the only real exception being the roof that has faded and a gutter channel that has been filled with sealant, no idea why though? I’ve put loads of waxoil on the rust prone areas and generally the car is exceptionally good and it has been garaged most of his life and is sat in my garage right now. The black paintwork has a lovely shine to it. The only other thing I can really think of is that the sunroof could do with realigning but its all square and shut and opens and closes fine.

There is an oil leak but hey, its an old BX so I wont make any apologies for it and its not LHM. I’d edge my bets on saying this is possibly the nicest BX 4x4 left and has many years of life ahead of it. Basically if you mention it, then this car has had it replaced. No expense has ever been spared and the mountain of paperwork shows this. I know some will say the 4x4 is awful and unreliable but I have to say I disagree. Dean aka Barnsley Bxer will confirm this.

From a spares point of view there is a spares car at Cavmads place that still has all its transmission available. I’ve also got a fair few fuel injection parts which can go with the car. Also there is a stainless exhaust available which came off the spares car although there is nothing wrong with the exhaust on this one. I’ve also got 4 litres of Total x4 transmission oil although this was changed when all the work was done around 3000miles ago.

Since the transmission and engine has been changed the car has had a very easy life only being used for shows and light duties although I have used this car for work on a number of occasions and it drives beautifully with no shunting at all. The electrically operated diff lock works on the switch although I’ve never needed to use it!

Where this car really comes alight though is on a twisty A or B road. I love driving this car and as soon as I’ve got the injectors back from being ultrasonically cleaned it’ll go in for an MOT so it will have MOT for 12 months. Its also got Michelins all round in very good order.

The history of this car is very interesting with most of its receipts being from citroen main dealers until the last few years where its been maintained by a Derbyshire specialist who I know well. I think the mileage is at 86000 now although its pretty academic considering the work its had to make right.

I’ve not gone into great detail about each bill as it would take me a long time, its best to come and have a read for yourself. The car is in Derbyshire and once MOT’d I’d happily drive it pretty much anywhere including the French or Swiss Alps where I’m sure this car would be in its element!

I wont beat about the bush with the price though, I want £1200 for it. I’ve got a few pictures which I can send people as I don’t want to take up space on the forum although there are pictures somewhere in the forum of the car.

I can vouch for the condition of the car. Very neat. Good luck Ian.

Likewise I`ve seen this car and it`s an absolute beauty. Rest assured if someone from the club (or anyone else for that matter) buys it they`ll have what`s probably the nicest BX on the road in Britain bar none. Ian, good luck with the sale though you won`t need it. The first genuine person to clap eyes on it will snatch your hands off. I just wish I could afford it though all being well I`ll have a GTi of my own soon, albeit a 2wd one.
BTW Ian still haven`t had the chance to get the part you wanted sorry but I haven`t forgotten about it.

Having decided i really need to get rid of this car would anybody be interested in it at £*** with 12 months MOT?

Alternatively i'd swap for a BX diesel.

That is one serious bargain. It will be worth a fortune in a few years time when the BX is a classic and what few 4x4s are left are sought after. If I didn't already have one,I'd be knocking on your door.I hope somebody on here buys it and gives it the good home it deserves.Good luck mate :D

Completely agree Dean, that`s probably the best BX bargain that`ll ever come around.
If anyone`s serious about owning one of, if not THE best BX`s then they`ll need to be quick because it`s probably a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
My problem is whilst I can afford it on paper I have two others which I couldn`t bear to part with and a recovery truck and the Merc to keep on top of.
Still, if the Corsa sells then I`ll be knocking on Ian`s door with the cash in my hand.
