Hi Matthew - No. It's a bit of a disaster :( Went to pick a mate up from Bristol at a constant 55mph as I am skint, and amazingly used only about 2 degrees of fuel gauge up doing 60 miles, but coming back the car started making droplink vibration noises which I put down to poor road surface, and then it got a bit worse, and I said "perhaps it's a tyre", and the moment I said "tyre"; Bang! Trouble is someone nicked my spare a few months back. We're now set to spend the night in a 24hr McDonnalds, which is how I am writing this using their WiFi. Tomorrow I am hoping we can scrape enough money together to get a local scrappy or tyre dealer to come out to us, but I was planning this to finish on fumes anyway, and then selling the car. It's a nightmare but we have to laugh otherwise we'd cry! Thanks for askin if we got sorted anyhow :)

Sorry to hear about your woe's, it's never fun when everything goes wrong :( Hope you get the tyre sorted, hopefully a 2nd hand tyre will get you back on the road. Sounds like the AA cover that you've got isn't that great, i've been with autoaid for year, its £35-40 for the year, only downside is that you have to stump up the cost, but you can claim it back, & it offers the same service as the expensive options available from other organsations, but for that v-low cost. Anyway's i wish you well, its an adventure ;)

Autoaid sounds good; must look into that in the future. Yeah, the AA were not that great in this instance. The only reason I joined them was when I was in a 2CV and hit a pot-hole blowing out both left tyres and destroying the wheels, I ended up behind another car that had just hit the same pot-hole and their AA man helped by shining a torch and then talked me into joining; But at the time I was about ten miles from somebody who had just bought two 2CV wheels from me, so I used those! Cleverly, Citroen made the wheels weaker than the suspension arms so it drove perfectly afterwards.

We are thinking that it is an adventure, but a somewhat distressing one. Never thought I would be so happy to see a McDonnalds!

No idea if your sorted.

I have a 'get you home' tyre on a wheel, no further. But I am 11/2 hours from where you are. 07535 407830

Or call Bob Charlton on 07778 592786 who lives just up the road in Stonehouse. He drives a car transporter for a living but might well be able to help. Will not be free though and he might be out on contract. He might know of a good source of repair. Say Alan Hitchcock, Bubblecars, gave you the number. He is not speedy but is dependable. Also recommend him for moving cars, though his transporter is a truck not a converted van and costs more feul as a result.

I assume the tyre is to far gone to drive with it on the back to a tyre depot. Suspension will cope if its mostly round. From memory the A38 from the south into Gloucester is the more small business orientated that the top end.

Thanks Alan. Very much appreciated, and I really wouldn't as you to drive so far. It would be epic! Luckily, after sleeping for two hours and waking up at 08:00 I found that a mobile tyre fitter was 2.5 miles away. As I am broke my Dad kindly helped me pay the bill which was a bit of a life saver. The tyre is a MIchelin, apparently from the year 2K!, so fourteen years old! It explains the "notchy steering" problem I have had for weeks. It completely popped. While knowing I possibly wouldn't sleep, with the car on top height, I noticed that the steering was almost twice as heavy as usual, so rotated it full lock just to test that it could do it. Unusually, this has re-off-centred the steering wheel, but completely transformed the handling, positively, so while good news in a way I am a little concerned something isn't tight, so need to assess when I have time and am more awake!

Thanks,
Adam

Sorry to hear of your woes Adam, a right ordeal by the sound of it.

Your comments about the re-off centred steering and light/heavy moments. I would advise the rubber coupling donut to the rack from the steering column, they are different on the non PAS cars and i know from experience one that is slowly breaking up can cause some very odd symptoms.

Thanks Matt - That figures... When I had the old GT I noticed that this disk [Hardy Disk?] was breaking up and decided it expedient to change it (overnight) before a trip to Scotland with friends. I would imagine it's more likely to go on a non PAS car. Ill check this out.

Glad you seem sorted, and sorry I just picked this up - I'm only a few miles up the road from where you broke, and while I wouldn' trust them long term, could have sorted you a wheel & 'get you' home tyre from my stock! Get back to me if you aren't sorted, I'm at work but finish at 4 today.

Glad its sorted out the immediate crisis. A blow out is enough to upset another element of the system. No sensible thought beyond that than check the wheel, which they would have done at the garage fiting the replacement.

Typically I also only just spotted this and was down at the workshop (Westons, Junc13) on Sunday aswell!
If you`d gone the other side of the roundabout you could have asked ex-BXer DomW in the mobility place.

You were driving on a 14 year old tyre, jesus, that is a lesson you hopefully won't be doing again. Luckily you were in a self levelling suspension car so a blow out isn't an issue, now if it had been on a normal car & you were going at speed, you could have been killed as you have no control. Ironically a front blow out is safer than a rear tyre letting go.

Yes - a 14 year old tyre! It still had plenty of tread, so I expect it must have been on the back until recently, as a MIchelin can do intergalactic distances on the rear of a BX. I never really thought about it until it was too late. Also, I did not know the date - the tyre man was able to date it by looking at something on it.

The amount of tread is irrelevent when the tyre is old, they can look like new, however they are weak & will go bang at any time. They recommend that you don't use tyres of more than 5-6 years old as a maximum. There is a sequence of numbers on the side of the tyre which will tell you when it was manufactured, i'd check your other tyres:

How do I tell the age of a tyre?

Tyres carry a DOT number on the sidewall that gives a production date. Since the year 2000 the numbers consist of 4 digits instead of 3. The first two digits indicate the calendar week of production and the next two the year of production.

Eg: 3004 – the tyre was manufactured in the 30th week of 2004.

For tyres manufactured in the 1990's there is a little triangle ? after the DOT code. Eg: 4 2 8 ? - the tyre was manufactured in the 42nd week of 1998.

If the tyre has a three digit code then it is too old.

Hope the above helps, it is really rather dangerous to drive on old tyres.
