Disaster!

Post by Leobx16v »

i parked my white bx behind the garage on saturday and went to it today to see order of the switches around the instrument cluster and found that it had spontaniously combusted, the fire started at the roof switches and carried on burnt sun visors roof liner, sunroof blind, front seats center consoles handbrake leaver, front pillar plastic cover and front carpet roof motor and windscreen. needless to say i am disheartened but i have to sort im not gonna write off a bx because of a fire.

Oh no :!:

Sounds bad but at least it extinguished itself before the car was a total loss.

So sorry to hear about this mate. Probably looks a lot worse than it is and most certainly could have been worse. I'm up the road in Lancaster, so give me a shout if you need a hand with anything.

Nasty but could have been a lot worse.

Remember to be careful when cleaning it up, burnt plastic isn't the nicest of things to inhale.

Good luck.

My white 16v did the same thing a couple of months ago. Luckily I was there when smoke started billowing from the sunroof area. There seemed to be a short/bad connection to the central locking plip receiver. It melted the plug and wiring to the receiver. Ive got a replacement plip receiver for mine but can't get hold of a plug anywhere. I shall be getting an auto electrician to check mine throughly before reconecting things and leaving battery permantly connected where its stored.

I was gonna say you had a similar thing didn't you?

Hmmm, might be something we need to take seriously....

A real downer. Well I certainly have a headlining that came from the recent 16 TRS break up if it fits. Not sure what bits of sunroof I might have spare if that is damaged. Not tackled my iffy one yet.

If the seats are damaged, a possible option to upright to leather? Have to try and gain the best from the situation.

I need roof liner, sun visor, haven't checked what sunroof bits I may need, wiring from where ever it starts, A pillar plastic cover, handbrake lever cover may even need the complete thing.
I do have the centre console and seats and the grey plastic sunroof cover. So I need a few things.

Damn that's unlucky! It's believed that a similar thing happened to my 4x4 years back, although luckily the damage was mostly confined to the wiring.

The more I think about it and read stuff like this, the more I feel that I'll remove the plip wiring and if I want remote locking I'll fit a modern system instead.

Don't think I have any parts that'll help, but I'll keep an eye open!
