Agreed. I'm sure once you've got this sorted Matthew and are screaming round the highways and byways of Clay Cross, you'll forget the tears and the money and just . . . grin. :D

I have an oil pressure sender (for the gauge) you're welcome to. The reading is a bit bouncy but mostly OK, and if nothing else will fill a hole! At least it's in good hands where it is; from seeing the work they've done I would be happy to leave my car there :)

People tend to forget about that stuff. Insurance: £1000 per month. Council tax: £650 per month. Rent: £650 per month. All in all I think it costs something like £7500 per month to open the doors on this place.

And my wages are pretty slim. There's no point trying to pay myself loads of money, because I'll just penalise the company I partly own.

I thought it was pretty cheap anyway, but hey.

I wasn't having a go, i know you're doing me a great deal, i was more about my crappy wages rather than meaning anything about yourself, apologies if it came across like that, it wasn't my intention.

It is a pity the dividends are now taxed more, but it is still sometimes worth taking the minimum wage on PAYE and top up with a dividend. Having partners makes that more tricky as everyone has to agree. Unequal partnership will be a further difficulty.

The shear cost of premises is horrendous. I own one still, and looked at it 6 years ago now, and shied away. It has not got cheaper. I would be looking for a 'mobile' business if I was to go back in business.
It is certainly a good time to think outside the box, as it were. I was mulling over an old idea. Buying an old ferry in working order, but out of legal compliance. Rework it as a floating scrap yard, tyre recycling (free fuel), second hand/bankrupt stock trading. Franchise out the cabins to holidays - linked to auto related activity. Courses on things, scrap your own car etc. The bar, would remain a tax free bar. Register out of the Isle of Man, or similar, so duck VAT etc. What could be better than a few weeks scrapping cars moored up at Tobermory (OK Balymory, possibly, in this case) with your classic car ashore for fun. Direct ship to ship flogging of scrap metal for top bunts cutting out the middle men. Its a mobile autojumble too. Calling at a dock near you, if your on the coast. Used spares for dead cars 8) ! If there was room karting.
Mean flogging the house and a lot of work but a pretty weird lifestyle. Minimal existence tax though. What's for supper? Fish and seaweed. Oh no not again, I long for fried lighthouse :-k .

No worries, I was probably being a bit sensitive. One of the problems I have, is that we're really a bit too cheap. But we don't have the man power to turn work around quickly, so have to offset that by being cheap.

Ignore me, I'm just tired

It would be the best way, but the business doesn't make much of a profit (though it's steadily improving), and there's little point me trying to take bonus' as it'll only slow down the repayment of the directors loans, which are technically a liability.

It's all those hidden costs that most people don't realise that makes up the overall cost of what they are paying for. We don't appear to be a country that encourages businesses when you look at Kitch's cost base per month, just seems wrong to me, especially the council tax amount :( especially when Rooney is on £300k a week, FFS.....

My brother's bike shop has to average £800 /day takings just to pay the bills. That doesn't sound much, but it's only a small shop with a total of about 5 employees, only 3 of which (including bro) are full time. There's silly things that cost a lot for small businesses, like recycling collections - the minimum charge for cardboard collection is for a tonne, which would have left no room in the shop for the bikes! When he mentioned this they told him to burn it!
