the 1769TD engine was introduced first, in 1988. With intercooler it had 88hp and 137lb-ft, and without intercooler was about 80hp. The 1769cc engine was used first as it is the stronger one, having a smaller bore (80mm as opposed to 83mm) and hence more metal around the bores.

The 1905 was introduced in 1992, with 92hp, and 149lb-ft. This engine was made possible as the casting for the engine was changed so that there was no longer a split between the cylinders in the block. Whilst this strengthened the engine, I think it was slighty responsible for the habit of the 1.9TD engine to munch it's head gasket in 120k miles. (as there are effectively no expansion gaps in the engine any more)

Having driven both 1769TD and 1905TD engines in the same bodyshell (405 estate) I would say that the 1769 is the more revvy engine and is more fun to drive hard, and the 1905TD engine is (slightly) more lazy, and doesn't have to be driven as hard. The difference in overall power output is insignificant. As a minor point though, the 1905TD is the better tow-engine.

The 2088cc TD engine is also a derivative of the same block, although it has a radically different head, and is a lot more powerfull (110hp)

I agree on the torque front, but my top end is quite noticeably quicker than my 1.7TD :D and the economy doesnt really seem different, you tend to lean on the torque in the 1.9s whereas the 1,7s are more of a buzzbomb.
