Ride height on start up.

Post by tranentbx »

Hi,

Sure this has been answered before so apologies!

When I start up my 14RE. The back end lifts fine but the front won't budge. To get round this, I just select the 2nd from top ride height and both front and back rise no problem. Then I drop it back to normal height setting and all is well.

Suspension feels as good as ever so not sure what the problem is? It's been doing it for about a year now.

Is it a sign of something serious or can I just live with it? Any suggestions/advice?

Thanks

Pascal

Sounds like a sicky front height corrector - mine's been doing the same and now the back seems to have trouble making up it's mind what to do. It may well get away wih a strip & clean, or you may decide to buy a seal kit for it and rebuild it.

Worth checking both front and rear and giving them a good lube with some 3 in one or similar, not wd40 as this will soon get washed away, i use a petrol/oil mix applied with a paint brush let it soak overnite, usually frees them up unless its completely seized, front one a little more difficult to get at, check the linkages while your there. do this periodically and should keep them free.

This is usually a sticky linkage problem rather than the height corrector itself. As Rutter says above, good lubrication is an answer that works. I normally give the linkage a spray with 3in1 penetrating oil, following up after a period of a spray of lithium grease.
For the front linkage it is usually more effective to spray from the side just behind the front wheel rather than from above and behind the engine.

Important too is to check the adjustment of the linkage when the BX is at the normal ride height. If this is wrong then nothing you do will improve things.

Thanks for the advice, will try grease and if no success, check the adjustment.

As we're discussing height correctors, Timex is doing something odd, and I thought I'd see if anyone else has any ideas on what to check in addition to the height correctors:

On start up the front lifts, when the back takes a minute or 2 (depending on how long it's been sat) to lift. When I set off, after a couple of miles the back will drop down to the stops, then slowly pick up again, after which it's fine. Don' think it's pump pressure as the steering and brakes seem unaffected!

I'll be going underneath tomorrow to lube linkages and check the correctors, then may buy a couple of seal kits for when I'm next off shift. May put some flush through aswell in case there's something clogging it up.

Possibly air in the system Mike. My XM was doing this for a while, but following the switch to Hydraurincage and several sessions of Citrobics it's now fine.

We've been discussing on Facebook the fact that I've running round with another engine and 'box in the back of Timex - I suspect the extra weight and additional use of the brakes etc may have disturbed something. I also know I've run it very low on fluid a couple of times.

That's probably caused air to get in, as per the above comment.
