Sphere Recharge

Post by demag »

Is there anyone within about 50 miles of Birmingham who could do a recharge? They're not flat but getting a touch firm and it would be nice to get it "floating" again.

He's a bit further south than 50 miles but Tony Weston has the kit for recharging spheres - he's about 5 miles south of J13 of the M5.

On the same tack. Does anyone collect used spheres if they are recharging them, as they must come across duff ones when customers are sat hoping for a pair. I am loath to throw things away but I have at least 10 duds, which might recharge. That number might grow, as floating is so nice. Then again a trip for a good pump and dump might be good, down wind.

yes, but they're a bit low on gas at the moment... best call first!

I think they have a collection of old spheres there too...

The car is not bouncy but tick time is about 17-18 seconds and movement on the corners is not as fluid as it could be. I've had Amtex spheres from GSF in the past and some have been firm after fitting. By getting a re charge at least I'll know everything is set to original spec.

Amazingly a place 3 miles away has all the gear and is going to look at them tomorrow. I used him years ago to do the cam belt on the Xm but thought he'd closed down.

The guys name is Simon Pearson. He used to be heavily into his 2cv's and was called Two Pot Services I think.
He said he charges £22 per sphere which compares favourably with Westroen who want £150 to do the job. Plus it's 3 miles as opposed to 70. :D He said he also inspects them rather than just blowing them back up and screwing them back on.

Will let you know when the job's done.

Edit:
Forgot to say he's about 1.5 miles from M6 Jnc 9 or 10.

But new spheres only cost about that, where is the saving?

Mine cost me less than that, but it was 18 months ago and the fuel you'd use getting here and back would negate that.

TB How do you know the pressure is correct in the new spheres? You don't. You are taking their word for it. This way they will all be pressurized correctly.

True, but is quality control that bad? If the fundamental selling point of the cars design is so compromised, I would argue, ownership is not worth the risk of a poor result. Bring me my cart sprung Ford! vom= Of course having access to the charging of spheres would allow the game of changing pressure specs, but again the factory must have done substantive testing to find the best values. It would be quicker to attempt to access that data and reduce the experimentation. Still we will see if your interactive approach is satisfying in due course.

I guess the reason that people play with sphere settings is that each model was set up to cater for the mass market at the time. This may be wrong for the individual, so setting sphere pressures differently, or fitting non standard spheres. I suppose it's the same as fitting different springs and shocks on that Ford!

Ah, the joy of adjustable dampers with spring tensioner, as the spanner sticks painfully to your fingers. The putter of the 12v air pump to gain more pressure after some mud plugging in the crisp spring morning gloaming, revealing the middle of nowhere. The choice of wheel diameter for the next section, from the pair of spares on the rear carrier, as you weigh up the effort of undoing 7 layers to have wee, if you accept a cup of steaming tea proffered. Its the joys of trialing. :D Pro celebrity suspension tuning for the bored at home. To be revisited with my DellowcrossLotus Special, YOY, 8-[ so I will stick to factory settings, if I may.

On the subject of spheres;

Last week I contacted AEP direct who listed 2 different genuine Citroen spheres for my TZD, from their reply below having your own spheres re-gassed may be the only way you can guarantee having the correct spheres fitted to your car in the future.

Hi there
You have listed 2 different parts no's for the front suspension
spheres for a Citroen BX 1.7 diesel turbo. SSBX55FT & FG. Could you
please advise me of the difference between the FT & FG?

The correct part number would be SSBX55FC, our supplier has superseded all the spheres to the one for the BX
Thanks
