electric fuel pump

Post by rutter123 »

should the electric fuel pump run at a constant pitch/whirring, as mine sounds fine whilst its priming up but once the engine is running the pitch seems to change quite considerably almost as tho its having trouble sucking the fuel up-speeds up slows down, there is plenty of fuel in the tank.

Fuel pump running is going to depend upon rail pressure, usage, and return flow.

The pump works hard when you switch on ignition as it primes and pumps the fuel rail up to pressure before the engine starts.
When the engine is running it delivers more fuel than is required and the surplus is returned to the tank via the pressure regulator. So it is then running at a constant rate audibly and will sound different from when you first switch on.

Whether yours is behaving normally or not depends more on how the car performs than how the pump sounds though.

Humbug - the new unit of pressure.

Had a similar thing on, was it the Visa GTI? Should not be particularly aware of the pump working really, so I am not sure its good news, if you become aware of the pumps efforts. Your experience tends to confirm that. Trust it is not going to be an expensive repair as I know nothing about the BX installation. Some cars are not easy. I was working in the print when mine went so it went to a garage for a big bill of some sort.

Yes im sure a garage would be particularly pleased to take a few hundred pounds from you for what is a relatively simple job, asides that i would hazard a guess that the pump fitted was the o/e factory fitted pump, so 25 years service is quite acceptable. At a cost of just under £50 for a new one inc new clips and 2 filters and some fuel line its cured the problem, tho i dont expect it will last 25 years.
