Couple of things to check for this:

Check the rear door seals, the rear door window seals, the door drain holes and the waterproof membrane behind the door panel are all in good condition.

Check the tailgate seal is doing it's job - sounds unlikely but I've known a leaking boot or tailgate seal let water in that makes it's way forward through the car.

Finally, is it only the rear footwells that are damp - water can easily make its way from the front of the car backwards, especially if it tends to drop the back end when parked.

Finally, finally, if you et a chance, pull all the carpet out the back to let it dry out, I know from Timex how water ingress can rot the floorpan!

Edited once to remove sunroof checks after realising it's an estate #-o

Timex was good at filling its rear footwells when I owned it. I eventually traced this to a torn FRONT door seal.

Still does it, partly from badly fitting back doors, partly from a hole under the screen surround on the passenger side and partly from a hole above the screen surround on the drivers side - guess what the first job is once Fred's on the road!

thanks for the replies

it might be the rear quarter window bonding, as im sure i have seen water running down the inside of defiantly the N/S one,

the other thought i had was maybe the roof rail/s

I think Mat has had experience of a split roof joint under one of the plastic capping pieces. If the rear quarter light in the door is leaking it may be worth checking the metal at the bottom of the glass - I have 2 doors to repair in this area.

I certainly think that's where water was getting in, as it stopped once I sealed between trim and roof panel. That was quite obvious though, as the headlining was wet so in the case of a mystery leak it may be elsewhere. Door seals can leak not only between seal and door, but water can track around the U section where it pushes onto the lip, and appear at the botom.

i dont mean the quarter light in the rear door Mike as these are not bonded, i mean the glass above the rear wing,

ok thanks Mat

so if the head lining is dry that should rule that one out,

the usual leak via doors is if the door card membrane is missing or damaged it will cause water to enter between the bottom of the card and the door its self, which in turn runs in and over the bottom section of the door seal

Ah sorry, not had any experience of those windows, although I've seen other cars with evidence of adhesive/sealant failure.

Probably not this but on the Xm a lot of mystery leaks were traced back to the roof aerial mounting.
