19TRS auto - let the re commissioning begin

So I took delivery of this 19TRS yesterday (got it recovered). Nice to see it again in the flesh, needs a good old clean and a bit of welding.

Anyway, started it today, struggling to idle, wound idle screw all way in to keep going. No power, v lumpy at idle, sounds like it might be running on 2or3 cylinders. Things didn't improve once engine hot.

Has been sitting by road in rainy Kerry for best part of a year.

Could it be damp in the distributor?

What's my 1st port of call?
Plugs, dist clean, carb clean I would imagine?

Any tips for a car DIY apprentice?

It drove ok once warm last summer when I saw it.

Yes in that order Max. Could be the damp, definitely try plugs first. Is the fuel old? Try a spoonful of fresh petrol into the carb then start it up and see if it's any better. If it's got the Solex carb they are a pig. Very complex for what they do. Watch you don't lose the settings but if it was ok but not now it can only be damp or dirt.

I'm a little bit backwards in coming forwards when it comes to spannery stuff, because the fact is, I know f*** all. But now Demag has mentioned the Solex carb, I'd reiterate what a pig they are. Once the Solex started playing up on my 16TGS nothing ever seemed to sort it; apparently the wax rheostat just goes awol. Something I didn't try - but is supposed to be a fool proof fix, was removing the auto-choke and replacing it with a manual one - it might work? Oh and replacing the distributor cap and rotor arm seemed to help.

i would drain it of all its old fuel inc carb, clean plugs diz cap and arm ( even better put them all in abox and dry them overnite in the airing cupboard) plug leads etc, fresh petrol then try again, a bit of damp start may help, check all your breathers for splits/leaks as this can cause starting probs, best of luck.

had similar probs with a pug 309 years ago solex, wax stat kept sticking running on choke most the time, i recall removing it and soaking in penetrating oil overnite, seemed to do the job.

Oil and filter might make it sound better Max. Was hoping to do mine today but Wifey had other ideas. Hopefully tomorrow now along with auto box fluid as well.

I did my rear arm bearings over a few evenings hammering away in the garage 'what's he building in there?!'

Definitely needs oil and filters and coolant, alternator belt, hp pump belt tightening, complete overhaul really!

I put €20 of petrol in as it way very low.

An ATF change I found on my XM produced good results, satisfying, always smooths them up

A couple in succession with some driving in between best if unsure of history.

The ATF on this one looks v clean and smells ok

Congratulations on your new car Max
With regards to piston slap, my 5th SAAB an 1982 ABW 414Y 99 with the first of the early 8v " H " engines used to suffer with piston slap ( it used to fine during the summers but come winter she would knock a bit from the pistons ) it was never a problem and once the thermostat had opened she used to be all quiet again. My current 1988 classic 900i with same " H " engine doesn,t suffer from the same problem

A few more things I've noticed that people might be able to shed light on:

- the oil in this car is overfilled by about a litre, would that gum spark plugs up etc? there is quite a bit of oil all over the place in the engine bay.

- long hose/breather? Goes from near the carb to in front of air filter housing is disconnected. Prob need to see pics really

- I'm not 100% sure but it also seems to be pulling away in 2nd/3rd definitely not 1 st, pushing throttle hard produces kick down to a higher gear- but from 5mph??!

Will be getting into cleaning stuff tonight

Overfilling an engine can cause all sorts of issues, including burning oil, popping seals and (mostly on boxer engines) even hydraulic locking! it's possibly why the breather has been disconnected too.

Great! This car is turning into a real can of worms fingers crossed I can do something useful with it.

If it's 1L between max and min I'd say it's got 750ml over max

You can buy a new weber carb if you need it, available from ebay, not cheap mind but will cure the problems, saying that demag seems to have success with his rebuild?

By the way Max, im rather jealous!

Don't be Tim- it's a very rough car at the moment!

Btw Do you know- do I need to take off the carb to clean the jets?
