rear pads - latest on the list of hard to find stuff!

Post by citsncycles »

Went to the motor factor to order front and rear pads for Timex. Fronts were easy to find, but none of their local suppliers listed the rears. They had to go to their main warehouse in the end, who had some old stock on the shelf.

One set should last a lifetime anyway, they don't do anything (unless you carry Jo Brand around in the boot)

Or a diesel engine, or drag a loaded transporter trailer behind you, or load it to the windows with concrete slabs, or load it to the roof with spare parts, or load 9 bicycles plus display equipment in the back, on a rear carrier and on the roof!

Errr - do you think I work Timex quite hard?

I just bought a set of rear pads on Micksgarage a week ago. Fremax is the brand, don't know anything about them. They were about €23.

 But seriously, I was wondering, in a unladen car with only the driver and "normal everyday" braking (I know...whats normal?..), do the rear brakes do anything? Do the rear pads even clasp the disk just a little?

Not had on the BX, but the GS has been known to seize the rear calipers. One thing worth stocking up on will be rear calipers if the GS is anything to go by - Chevronics are the only stockists of new ones I know of while 2nd hand ones are unobtainable as they are usually seized solid. Fronts are in plentiful supply though, as they don't seize up.

My 19RD failed the NCT recently because of rear brake imbalance. One of the rear calipers was leaking. The mechanic fitted one from an Xantia. Didn't know they were the same. Are front Xantia calipers also the same as on the BX? I don't know what age Xantia he got it off of (maybe it is only early Xantias??)

It's quite possible, there's a lot of common or close enough parts between Xantia and BX.

Xantia fronts do fit, there are a number of sizes to choose from, the larger ones will require a wheel upgrade iirc

Xantia berline rear pads are the same as BX, only 1mm thinner (7mm of friction material compared to BX 8mm or so), so there's no problem in finding them ;)

I got a set of discs and pads last year from euro car parts, they ordered them and came the next day.

They don't do much at all, which is why the calipers seize and the discs rust rather than wear out. It's seriously good to have a bit of weight in the back from time to time. I imagine estates are more likely to give their rear brakes a workout - had a good few hundred kg of gravel in the back of mine the other week.

Looking at the front calipers on mine last week because a pad had worn out and was graunching the disk on one side. The side that hadn't failed only had perhaps 1mm of wear on the pads but there was obviously not enough lateral movement available for much more wear to take place. We thought this (being a recon) might have been from a Xantia - so I'm guessing we may have to look out for minor differences if fitting Xantia parts.
