What does this pipe do?

Post by adamskibx »

Hi - I just prepared my car for it's journey to the new owners house and noticed a split rubber pipe which leads from below the carb to after the air filter. I have fixed it by clipping off each bad end and making up the length with a piece of electrical cable outer as that's all I had to hand, but what does it do? It certainly doesn't run right without it connected. As far as I can tell it would suck in extra air when idling, and comparatively less air when running flat out as there would be a more of a vacuum between the air filter and carb at high speed. Is it called an idle correction pipe? It sometimes comes loose which is why I checked it, and the car is a bit hesitant in traffic when it's loose.

It recirculates crankcase gasses to the inlet manifold under vacuum i believe.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

And if its loose or disconnected or broke it will upset the idle, causes low speed running issues.
