Ramsey Isle Of Man.

Post by christhelion »

I was enjoying my TT experience and was coming the "wrong" way through parliament square after finding the mountain road to be shut. A red hatch passed me coming the other way. I was the guy on the bike.. you'll have spotted me I'm sure :)

the TT is something everyone should see. Even if they're not into bikes. If I didn't have my bike boots on I'm sure that my socks would have been blown clean off. It's awesome. Although, it's slightly overshadowed by the island itself. It's a gorgeous place.

I was going to go in 2012. Booked the ferry crossing in 2011 and started trying to find accommodation. I contacted every b & b on the IOM, but to no avail. My mate's wife is from IOM and she tried to find me somewhere to stay. Again no luck. Eventually looked to campsites. Plenty of room. £500 for five days camping!! I'll just watch the ( excellent ) coverage on ITV4 and soak in the atmosphere as all the bikes sail through Lancaster on their way to Heysham.

I love the TT because all the twats from all over Europe head there and leave the roads elsewhere nice and quiet.... :D
The IoM itself is lovely, but I only went to the TT once, in 1993, and hated the whole experience. Many tens of thousands of testosterone-fuelled males crowded onto a small island - ugh. Didn't get to do a single complete lap of the course because every time I tried someone else had killed themselves (and often taken someone else with them) and the road was closed. The 'atmosphere' on the seafront at Douglas on the saturday night was like some kind of post-apocalyptic take on Dantés Inferno.

Maybe it's different these days, but add to that the fact I've lost rather too many friends and colleagues racing there and although I'm glad it exists, I have no desire whatsoever to go back - except maybe for the classic TT (Manx GP as it used to be).

Don't mind me though - everyone should go and have a look, and I know plenty of people who love it to bits.

I can agree with you there. Despite being a biker I did say to my mate that what ruins the TT is bikers. I had a blast over the mountain but I was pretty steady away even in the derestricted bottom parts of the circuit. And I made sure I didn't get into chasing anything faster than me. My favourite part of the circuit is one of the slower, more technical parts around glen helen and it's a 60mph but if you're smooth and don't brake for any of it it's enjoyable even at 60.
The best riding though isn't on the circuit I found. It's on the Laxey road and a road coming from the calf to... ermm.. another bit. Nobody uses them so you can ride them at your own pace without watching in the mirrors for "fast" (read blast in a straight line and brake as hard as possible to 5mph for corners) coming up behind you on GSXR1000s they've bought on finance.

But overall I loved it. The people made it and the nights in the Raven at Ballaugh. I never went out in Douglas coz time got in the way but for me it was a week of no work, riding with my best mate and having a quiet beer or two in the nights.
