What are your most useful tools...

Post by themildbunch »

Having been doing some nastier BX jobs recently I've come to love and find work much easier with a few key tools... Here's my favourite few to stop me swearing at the moment:

Long, flexi 7mm hose screwdriver

140 lumens LED bulb upgrade for my Maglight - I can really see down the back of the engine now...

Set of Flexi headed ratchet spanners

My 3/8th drive instant grip two way socket wrench with articulated handle. Brilliant for nuts you cannot get at, or rotate, normally. Bought at Mannhiem Veterama for about 9 Euros.

Also several special tools as without them the task is a bruising battle and things get damaged. The tools, while avoidable, make the task so simple. Front bearing removal tool for the Messerschmitt being a rare but cunningly good item. No doubt some such exists for BX, like a proper shere tool.

My standard toolbox. It has a flexible part for screwdrivers & small sockets, knuckle joints to get at awkward bolts. Also the torque wrench for undoing stubborn nuts or bolts.
& I have to add to the list Jehovah's witnesses. I used them to hold my 4x4 axle as I screwed it on.

For medium term repairs it has to be my roll of gaffa tape! Otherwise it's not a single tool rather but rather a set - my welding, cutting and metal shaping tools! There's several cars running round the west country today that would be bean tins now if I hadn't repaired them, either for myself or for friends!

1/4 inch drive palm ratchet prob the most recent and well used. Remarkably my tzdt didnt need any welding for its mot this year (first time in 8 years) so the 4 inch angle grinder stayed in its box, again well used, got quite attached to my power file too.

The most useful tool in the World is an adjustable spanner, closely followed by metal coat hanger wire, I think.

Mmm, those palm ratchet's look good - might have to get a set...

My other favourite tool at the moment is my hammer.. really nice old one from a car boot... long hickory handle, larger than household flat / ball head... just heavy enough to give things a good shock but not too heavy to make your wrist hurt!

Did you know the German's nickname for the adjustable spanner is the 'English Spanner'!

Its got to balance right, then its all in the wrist action. Pro celebrity larraping. My fav hammer is axctually my great granfathers panel pin hammer. It is beutifully ballanced and has a megnet one end to pick up a pin, tap rotate the hammer and drive it home. Oh, so satisfying.
