Is it an ecu issue you've got? or did you want to try & borrow one to see if that cures the problem? (i haven't got one just incase you ask).

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
Might be worth trying an independent VW specialist. The earlier VW's used Bosch before switching to Digifant.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
Thats why i tried the Alfa Romeo specialists as they use the Le1 set up from cars of same era, it needs to go on an oscilloscope or something, it could well be an ecu issue but finding a replacement is a needle in a haystack.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
The prob is with lower rpm range between 1500-3000 still got misfire, engine lurching, hesitation, idling issues, very rich on the exhaust? Above 3k is fine, have changed plugs (bosch), leads (bougicord), cap & arm, king lead, tps, temp sensor ok, head gasket done and valves lapped, good comp @ 175 on all 4, timing set @ 5 btdc, injectors asnu cleaned and serviced, fuel pump/pressure good @ 35psi, new fuel lines front to rear and new filter, i suspect the prob lies somewhere in the airflow meter/ecu, almost as if the injector opening timing is not increasing with the opening of the flap?

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
Excessive vacuum leak => resulting in misfire & unburnt fuel => giving impression of running rich? At higher RPM, vacuum leak becomes less important as throttle is more open & intake manifold pressure rises. I have an old 8" vacuum gauge which according to the instruction sheet enables one to diagnose all kinds of running issues. PM me if you want to borrow it. Steve

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
There are only 2 vacuums 1 on the diz to throttle body which has been replaced, other to fuel pressure reg which has also been replaced, fuel pr.reg also working correctly, also made some gaskets to seal suspect leaky inlet manifold, as far as i know there are no airleaks pre airflow meter, even blanked off the S.a.d ( choke valve) to eliminate this.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
Is the second throttle butterfly behaving itself? If the shaft has become corroded and is not rotating smoothly under airflow and its light spring pressure, it may be holding closed too long until the extra draught of the higher rpm.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
The throttle body and all its components are working correctly, cleaning the body seemed to make the idle a bit more steady, there is def a big flat spot and troublesome area between 2/3k.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
Try taking off the air duct and lubricating the butterfly shaft either side with 3-in-1 penetrating oil. As well as lubricating, this seems to deal well with removing any corrosion which may cause flat spots in its rotation.

Re: Bosch efi specialist needed?.
If you can't find an airflow meter replacement then I think I may have one but its off a cat fitted GTi. I dont know if its a direct replacement.
Other options :
There must be a diagnostic somewhere to enable you to check the output from the carbon track on the FM. These are known to wear.
Convert it to Motronic from a breaker. You will need the engine and ECU loom as well as all the engine bits. This system has no distributor which is a definite advantage.
I cant see mention of swapping HT coil, ignition module or in desperation the distributor. These are all worth a try.
